Query posted by Eddy, Okie on April 13, 2002 for , ULRICH, HARRINGTON, SWIFT

Saw your query on the Craig county webpage. My step-grandmother's first husband was an "Ed Ulrich". I don't know where they married. She was Eleanor Harrington, born 1889 in Altamont, Labette, KS. They weren't able to have babies that lived, so finally they adopted a baby girl out of a Kansas City, MO facility. This baby was born in April 1925. Before that, Ed and Eleanor and her father had all been living in the country north of Vinita. At the time of the adoption, Ed and Eleanor were living in Missouri where he worked for a lumber yard for a Vinita man. I can't recall the name of the town.

Re: BUCKMASTER   450B

Query posted by Eddy, Okie on April 13, 2002 for , MCCOY, SWIFT, BUCKMASTER, HIGHTOWER

Hello, Saw your query on Craig county for Buckmaster. My mother's oldest sister, Leona Swift married David McCoy in 1945. David's sister was Emma McCoy who married a Buckmaster and had a son, Luther. That is all that I know of them, but I have been collecting info on the McCoy family including pictures for years, especially since both David and Leona are deceased and I have their photos, etc.
David and Emma (and others) were the children of Amanda (Mandy) and Thomas B. McCoy. She was born 1868 in Knox Co, Ill and died in Miami in 1946. Thomas was born 1859 in Dallas co, IA and died at Bluejacket (I think) in 1927. They are both buried in the Welch cemetery just off the main highway in town as well as some of their sons. David was born in Delaware county, Oklahoma in 1908 and they moved to Bluejacket sometime after that. After Thomas died, David and his mother bought a place in Miami, Ottawa Co, Ok and lived there. Amanda continued to live with him and his new wife, Leona after they married. He served in the US Army and saw action in Africa, etc. I have some of his Army memorabilia, cards and photographs. I believe that the Buckmaster girl lived next door or close-by in Miami. My mother remembers them.
I also have info on other McCoy families but do not know how this one fits with the others. I personally "do not" have McCoy as an ancestor, but because of my love and admiration for my aunt and uncle who had no children I have worked on his line as well as her's.
I would like to hear from you in hopes that we can share information to both of our benefits.
Sincerely, Eddene Hightower Thompson of Spavinaw, Ok

Saw your query on the Craig county webpage. I do not know all of our WASSON connection, but can give you some on them as they married into my LEGAN family out of Indiana. Contact me and we can communicate by email. My great-grandmother's brother was Alexander WASSON Rhoten. He brought his family from Conway, Laclede Co, Mo to Bluejacket, Craig county, Ok prior to Oklahoma becoming a state in 1907. His sister and her Taylor family soon followed, thus my mother, Eunice Sarah SWIFT was born here in 1918. Would love to see if we can make the connection.

Native American Heritage: Elizabeth (Betty) Mayes Hyatt   416

Query posted by Kettler on April 19, 2002 for , HYATT, WILLIAMS

In a deposition in Bloomington, IL, dated 13 Jan 1899, Clayton L. Mayes (sometimes Mays) stated that his older sister Elizabeth, married name Hyatt, was living at that time at Welch, Indian Territory. Elizabeth (Betty P.) was born about 1848 in Kentucky, probably in Christian County. After leaving Kentucky, the family settled in Montgomery County, KS. Clayton and Elizabeth were siblings of my greatgrandmother, Maranda C. Mayes Williams. It is my understanding that the Mayes family was of Native American extraction, and I am trying to determine their tribal origin. Can anyone steer me to a source of information? Living descendants could be helpful.

None of the above.
Welch was in the Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory, not Oklahoma Territory. There were no counties in the Cherokee Nation in 1900. You have to find it by township and range within the Nation. Welch was in Twp 28 Range 20 I believe.

The other names are as follows: John Damerion, date of marriage unknown, and Jim Tallon, date of marriage unknown. According the info I received, Nancy had a child named Madge Ola Bennett in 1897 while with Jim Tallon. I am wondering if this child is illegitimate or someone's records are wrong. Do you have any information re: this?

Wantland Lewis Sandel   432

Query posted by Curren, Leeanna on June 21, 2002 for SANDEL

Wantland is the brother of Wilma Sandel Black and Louise Sandel Erdman who are both buried in the Vinita Cemetery with their husbands. You got their dates for me a few months ago. The last information I had at that time on their brother, Wantland Sandel was that he died between 1959 and 1985 and was living in WY in 1959. Just this past week I was told by his grandson that he died in Oklahoma in the 1970's, but they didn't know anything more definite.. I have not been able to find him in the Social Security index. I thought he might have lived near his sisters in Vinita since he is not buried in Cleveland county near his parents. I would appreciate it if someone could check the cemetery records for him.
Thank you. Leeanna
