Looking for school books from the Little Rock Elementary School, located in Woodland Junction (Between Locust Grove and Rose on Highway 33)  Woodland Junction was just a filling station and convenience store. There was a few small houses and a Free Will Baptist near it.  I am told that where the school was is now a nursery, but that could have changed by now.  It was mostly Cherokee Indians that attended, so it could have been an Indian school.  The teachers that I had was Dave and Myrtle Littlefield, Ms. Qualls, Ms. Kenney and Coy Scroggins

Posted on 8Mar2009 by Cora Miller

I am blind and live in Ottawa County, OK
I am looking for evidence of  two families in Mayes county 1910-1930- actually three surnames
Jesse barnhart md. Jennie Ellen CANTRELL on 26,Dec.1910 Mayes County, OK
I found the information on www.odcr.com
I am needing a death date or birth date for Mr. BARNHART
He apparently died before Nov. 1916 because he is not on 1920 census and Jenny married Joe THATCHER nov 1916 Mayes County, OK
Mr. BARNHART father John and mother SARAH are also buried in Mayes County where can I find the cemetery listings?
Jenny CANTRELL (Cottrell,CASTRELL)  family are also in Mayes County 1920 but most of them including Jenny migrate to Muskogee County
and are buried there. The BARNHART family are buried in and around River twp I suspect as that is where they lived on census records.
I have checked Mayes County archives and can not find a list of burials or cemeteries that I can look into via internet.
I also do not have any idea how or where to get or ask for an death notice /obit for the BARNHART family.
They are ones I am most interested in. My half sister is grand daughter to Jesse and Jennie Ellen CANTRELL , BARNHART

Additional Info on 9May2009:
looking for burial, cemetery or funeral home records for the following men.
I do not have a death date for them. Jesse BARNHART(in 1910 census Jesse BANKART)
b. @1886 Mo. d. ? before Nov.1916 Mayes County, OK.  Jesse lived in "River twp, Mayes County " according to 1910 census
He married Jennie Ellen CANTREL(Cottrell,CASTRELL) Dec.1910 Mayes County, OK.    We know that Jesse died before Nov. 1916 because Jennie married husband 2 Joe THATCHER Nov1916 Mayes County, OK.  In 1910 census Jess was est. 24 years old
*****JohnBARNHART -b.@1862 Mo. d? md. Sarah? or polly. He too lived in Mayes County 1910 census. John wife died before 1920 census as on 1920 census John lived in Mayes county and was listed as widower. I am trying to locate death dates  or cemetery information on these men. I have tried ancestry .com there are no records for Oklahoma there. I also tried Mayes County gen web. that site seems incomplete. I have library looking but it may not be  very successful as I have no exact dates.
Some of the BARNHART family lived around Spavinaw, OK
I do not mind paying copies or gas.  Thanks for any help or guidance Cora Miller blind in Miami

I was there last year trying to do the same thing.  My ggrandmother, Nancy Jane Jackson, is buried there, also.  I drive up Hwy 69 and turned East on 69A.  I stopped at a pipe factory and was they said to continue on 69A until I came to a big water tower.  I made a right at that street, don't remember the name.  Then traveled down quite aways until I came to a dirt road the headed East, also.  They told me that there would be a locked gate and I would have to walk from there.  If you drove someone would think you were poaching and probably shoot you.  Once I climbed through the gate, they told me to make a left at the first road.  It was about 100 degrees that day and I had already went through 2 other graveyards in Drumwright.  When I arrived at the other dirt road it was very overgrown with brush you couldn't see the road that well.  I was in shorts and shoes and wasn't trusting the snakes in that area.  Needless to say, I didn't make it.  Somewhere on the Internet I did find a picture of her headstone.  I'll try to remember where I found the pic.

Submitted by:  Bill and Kay Winter on 15Sep2008

James' full name was FRANK JAMES STEPHENS but all records seem to list him as only JAMES STEPHENS. He was born in 1806 so he would have been 90 years old.  The information that I received said, "Spavinaw, Delaware Co., OK ,  but I see Spavinaw is in Mayes County.  Perhaps there is a cemetery that is actually in Delaware County, but close to the county line.  Some records show he died in MO but was buried in OK.  The story is that he slipped on ice, broke a hip and died.  That would lead one to believe he died in the
wintertime. James Stephens was married to Elizabeth Dyer.  I know they were in Hickory Co., MO at the time of the 1860 census, but because they had Confederate leanings, the left shortly after 1860 and went to SW Missouri or perhaps to Indian Territory.   No 1870 census record has been found for them.  By 1880, he had moved to Arkansas and had re-married to Nancy Pendergraft.    I found
a newspaper article, Barrry Co., MO  in  January,1892 which said, " James Stephens is going to the Indian Territory to make this his future home.  Mr. Stephens went there some years ago and __st (lost?) his wife and five children, then returned but is going back again."
Can anyone tell me where James Stephens is buried, perhaps with his first wife, Elizabeth and their children?

I am searching for a newspaper item of my Aunt Wellington Smith Adair who was murdered in 1922 in Mays County by a negro farm hand according to her husband obituary 7 years later.
In the obituary of George S. Adair from Bourbon Co., ky August 9, 1929 it stated he was dispondent about the death of his wife, George committed suicide on August 8, 1929 and it says his wife died 7 years ago yesterday in Oklahoma  when she was brutally assulted  and murdered  by a negro farm hand, it says that the negro was afterward legally executed. I am assuming from that date and 7 years back then she would have died August 7, 1922. he remains were taken back to Kentucky for burial,  There should have been a front page articule on this person in the news. can anyone help with this

This murder gained much press coverage at the time. The "farm hand" was Elias Ridge and was about 15 at the time. Elias was told by his uncle, Hardy Smith,  that if he would kill Mrs. Adair, he (Hardy) would give him a red pig (according to the Court of Criminal Appeals summary of the case. Mrs. Adair was supposed to testify against Smith in a whiskey peddling case. Smith was a relative of Elias and also Elias probably was "simple-minded". Both were convicted of the murder with Elias being given death and Smith, Life. Both convictions were overturned on appeal. Smith was released and not re-tried. Elias was convicted a second time by a new jury and again given the death penalty. On the second appeal, his conviction was converted to life. Elias died at the Oklahoma State Pen in 1933 of TB..
The murder happened near the town of Pensacola in NE Mayes Co.  I have several newspaper articles about the murder as well as copies of court documents.  I am going to be out of state until after Veteran's Day but if you will e-mail me with your mailing address and phone number I will make copies and get them to you in a week or so.

My name is Brian Siddall and I am a WWII researcher.  I am currently researching the burials on Omaha Beach in Normandy.  From June 7th to June 8th 1944 Americans were buried directly on the Beach.
After that they were buried in the Temporary Cemetery on top of the Bluffs which became the permanent American Cemetery in Normandy in 1948.
I have narrowed down my list of men buried on the beach to 42 who I have no unit information for (i.e. Division, Regiment and even company if available).
One of the men is from your county.  His name is Sammie Adkins Serial Number 38322691 killed on June 6th or 7th.  I was wondering if you had any information on him pertaining to his unit
that he was serving with when killed on Omaha Beach.
