Clifford L. May

(February 24, 1922 - March 23, 2011)
Clifford L. MayClifford L. May was born February 24, 1922 on a farm southeast of Crescent, Oklahoma. He had many stories to tell of riding his horse to school and coming to Guthrie in a wagon with his father to sell watermelons. His family moved to Guthrie in 1935 and he later graduated from Guthrie High School. Clifford passed away on March 23, 2011 in Oklahoma City at the Clare Bridge Alzheimer Living Center.
Clifford was in the Civilian Conservation Corp of Oklahoma and served in Basin, Wyoming where he was a Mess Sergeant with the responsibility of feeding over 200 young men each day.
Clifford was a hard worker; he started as a ditch digger and worked his way up to the Area Manager with Oklahoma Natural Gas. He retired from ONG in 1984 with over 44 years of service. He will be remembered by many for his compassion to those that fell on hard times when trying to pay their gas bill.
His retirement years were very busy; helping to build the Calvary Hill Baptist Church, operating a mattress/furniture store in Norman, and volunteering at Community Church where he was a charter member and ordained elder. He was a member of the Rotary Club and the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry for over 50 years.
He was also very active in the Guthrie community; serving on many boards and leading fund-raising drives. He was a former president of the Guthrie Chamber of Commerce, Guthrie Rotary Club, Logan County Industrial Authority and Guthrie Community Chest. He also served on the Board of Directors for the Logan County Red Cross and was a charter member of the Good Sams camping group.
He is survived by his son, Richard and Sandra May of Guthrie; step-sons Gene Wingate of Berryville, Arkansas and Eddie Wingate of Springfield, Missouri. He is also survived by grandchildren Cindy and Bill Pickle of Guthrie and Gregg and Kim May of Edmond; great-grandchildren Justin, Scott and Stephanie Pickle of Guthrie and Kylie and Cameron May of Edmond. Clifford was preceded in death by his parents Verman and Ethel Brock May, his first wife, Lavonne May in 1944 and by his wife of 54 years, Evelyn May in 1999.
In lieu of flowers, donations should be made to the Guthrie Community Church or the Alzheimer's Association. Sincere thanks to the staff and directors of the Clare Bridge Living Center, Companion Hospice and Smith-Gallo Funeral Home, their professional and compassionate care for Clifford is greatly appreciated.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, March 28, 2011 at Community Church with Dr. Tom Hood of Weatherford, TX and Pastor Bill Williams of Community Church officiating. Interment will follow at Summit View Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Smith-Gallo Funeral Home, Guthrie.
Visitation will be Sunday, 1:00 p.m.—8:00 p.m.
