GOLDEN WEDDING
An event of rare occurance was celebrated in the home of Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Bower in the northern part of Welsh. The event was the celebration of the fifyth wedding anniversary of this couple. The affair was one of the happiest in the lives of this family and to all that were present. There were present seven of the nine children as follows. Mr. and Mrs. George Bower and son and Ed Bower, all of Santa Anna, Calif., Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Bower and daughter of near Lake Arthur, Mr. and Mrs. Jas. F. Bower and two children, Mr. and Mrs. E.C. Powell and three children, Mr. and Mrs. D.H. Kelly and son, and Mr. Tom Bower. Besides these were present Mr. and Mrs. Howard Willard and Mrs. E.C. Willard and two children. Two daughters, one living in Guthrie, Logan County, Okla., and one living in Bakersfield, Cal. and ten grandchildren were present.
In all there were twenty eight guests that sat down to the anniversary dinner. The large number of nice presents and many cards from a distance as tokens of love expressed in a high degree the love and esteem in which this couple is held. One of the richest expressions of esteem was the nice purse of solid gold pieces under each plate at dinner.
Mr. and Mrs. Bower were married in Indianapolis on April 14, 1854 during the hottest part of the Civil War while Mr. Bower was home on furlough from the front. Mrs. Bower before her marriage was Miss Sara C. Hoss of Indianapolis. The two were reared in the same neighborhood and were sweethearts from childhood. After marriage they continued to live in Indiana until 1886, during which time Mr. Bower was engaged in farming, sawmilling and shingle manufacturing. In 1886 they moved to the state of Kansas where they resided until 1887. By this time some of the children had grown up and come to the south and Mr. Bower at this time was suffering from rheumatism and they decided to move to the south both to be near the children and also in the interest of Mr. Bower's health. They lived first at Lakeside about 25 miles south of this place and in 1900 moved to Welsh where they have resided since. Mr. Bower has regained his perfect health and the two have prospects of many years yet of health and happiness in this life.

SARAH CATHERINE HOSS (7H) was born March 3, 1843 in Marion County Indiana. She spent her childhood with her parents on their farm in Lawrence Township. On April 14, 1864 she married Jacob W. Bower. Ten children were born to this couple.

Jacob W. Bower was born in Posey County Indiana, October 11, 1839. He served in the Union Army during the Civil War. The following is from his service record in the National Archives in Washington D.C. He enlisted as a volunteer in Company D, 26th Regiment, Indiana Infantry on July 28, 1861, at Indianapolis. He was promoted to the rank of Corporal, February 1862, and to Sgt, October 17, 1862. He was wounded December 7, 1862 in a battle at Prarie Grove, Arkansas. He spent some time in a hospital at Fayetteville, Arkansas. He rejoined his unit in January 1863, and was assigned special duty as a Train guard at Rolla, Missouri during March and April, 1863, after which he again returned to Company D. During September 1863, he spent some time in a convalescent camp near Carrolton Louisiana. From November 1863 through 1864 he was on daily duty as a Company clerk. Because he had completed his enlistment, he was given a discharge at Brownsville, Texas on January 31, 1864 and re-enlisted as a veteran volunteer on the following day. He retained his rank as Sgt. He was promoted to 1st Sgt of Company D on April 1, 1865. On April 4, 1864 he was given a furlough, returning to the army a month later. (During this month he returned to Indiana for his wedding.) He mustered out of the Army on January 11, 1866 at Vicksburgh, Mississippi. His original enlistment papers describe him as 22 years of age, 6 feet 0 inches tall, fair complexion, blue eyes, brown hair and a farmer by occupation.

Jacob and Catherine Bower were residents of Bartholomew County Indiana in 1882. They moved to Butler County Kansas sometime later, and still later to Louisiana.
