The Vanzant School (historically listed as Vanzant or East Vanzant) and the Vanzant Church are historic community landmarks located in rural Okfuskee County, Oklahoma, near the town of Paden. [1, 2, 3]
Overview & History
  • Vanzant School: Recorded in early Okfuskee County school records as a rural public schoolhouse (grades 1–8 for white students, listed under Section 17, Township 11N, Range 7E). The schoolhouse also served as a local civic hub, frequently utilized as a designated voting or registration precinct (such as Paden precinct polling and registrar sites). An "East Vanzant School" is also referenced in county genealogy and historical school rosters. [1, 2, 3, 4]
  • Vanzant Church: Situated near the school location (approximate coordinates 35.42813° N, 96.60002° W at an elevation of 1,003 feet), the Vanzant Church operated as a rural congregation. Historical church records from the 1930s note regular gatherings (such as meeting on the fourth Sunday of each month with a small resident membership). [1, 2, 3]
  • Local Significance: Like many rural Oklahoma school-and-church pairings from the early-to-mid 20th century, the Vanzant site acted as a central gathering place for local farming families, community meetings, and regional history documented through county archives and the Gateway to Oklahoma History.
