Koon's Sod House

Taken about 1900

My grandparents, John Elsworth Koons and Viola May Moir Koons moved to Garfield County, Oklahoma before Dec 1895. They lived in Blaine Township.

John E Koons homestead 160 acres in Section 29, Township 24 North, Range 3 West on SW l/4 of section. I have his Homestead Papers. They lived there from approximately Dec 1895 to October 1902. My Mother, Dorothy Koons Bartlett, was born at Blaine Township on 20 May 1901.

There is a Koons Creek listed on a map in this area that started in Section 19 and ran southward through Section 29.

My grandmother Viola May Moir Koons was a schoolteacher and may have taught at McDowell School.

John Koons is shown with wife Viola and children Dillen, George and Frances Koons. My Grandmother Viola is pregnant with a baby that was born dead (blue baby) shortly after this picture was taken.
