October 7, 1982

Services for William Gilbert GRIFFITH of Wichita, Kan., formerly of Vian, were held Friday, Oct. 8, at 2 p.m. in the Vian Baptist Church with the Rev. Marvin Sorrells officiating. Burial followed in the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Vian under the direction of the Agent Funeral Home in Sallisaw. Mr. GRIFFITH was born to Virgil Lee GRIFFITH and Pearl Mae OWENS GRIFFITH on Dec. 13, 1915, in Vian. He died at the Veteran's Administration Hospital in Wichita on Wednesday, oct. 6, at the age of 66. Survivors include two daughters, Shirley and Brenda Marie; one stepson, Larry; two granddaughters; two sisters, Dorothy and Marie; and two brothers, Glen, and Virgil.

Services for Norma Jean WINTON of Roland were held Friday, Oct. 8, at 2 p.m. in the Agent Chapel in Muldrow with the Rev. Bob Winton officiating. Burial was in the Mitchell Cemetery, west of Muldrow, under the direction of the Agent Funeral Home in Sallisaw. Mrs. WINTON was born Sept. 7, 1934, to Richard YOUNG and Sophia Mary MILLICAN YOUNG in Vian. She died at Sparks Regional Medical Center in Fort Smith, Ark., on Wednesday, Oct. 6, at the age of 48. Mrs. WINTON and her husband, Roy Gene WINTON, were married Aug. 24, 1959, in Van Buren, Ark. He survives. Other survivors include one daughter, Doris Jean; two sons, Tony Elliott III and Roy Guenn; two granddaughters; the father, Richard YOUNG; the mother, Mary RIDDLE; two sisters, Frances and Patricia; one brother, Robert Lee; and the maternal grandmother, Josie MILICAN.

October 14, 1982

Services for Charles BALDRIDGE of Carthage, Mo., were held Thursday, Oct. 7 at 1:30 p.m. in the Knell Funeral Home in Carthage. Burial followed in the Park Cemetery in Carthage under the direction of Knell's Funeral Home. Mr. BALDRIDGE was born to Dave BALDRIDGE and Bessie WATTS BALDRIDGE on Feb. 17, 1929, in Carthage. He died at St. Johns Hospital in Joplin, Mo., on Monday, Oct. 4, at the age of 53. Survivors include one daughter, Susan; and two brothers, Roger and Herman Paul.

Services for Nile Hargus CLAYTON of Sallisaw were held Tuesday, Oct. 12, at 10 a.m. in the Church of Christ in Sallisaw with Bro. Royce Martin and Bro. Ira C. Brackett officiating. Burial followed in the Haskell City Cemetery under the direction of the Agent Funeral Home. Mr. CLAYTON was born to O.R. CLAYTON and Della FEATHERSTON CLAYTON on June 2, 1907, in Natura, Indian Territory. He died at a hospital in Fort Smith, Ark., on Sunday, Oct. 10, at the age of 75. He and his wife, the former Vera Martin, were married May 15, 1934, in Haskell. She survives. Other survivors include two daughters, Nila Wayne and Sue; one son, Tommy R.; six grandchildren; one great-grandson; and one brother.

Services for Norman Harold RICHARDS of Spiro were held Wednesday, Oct. 13, at 2 p.m. in the Church of Christ in Spiro with Bro Joe Avery officiating. Burial was in the Old Cache Cemetery, east of Keota, under the direction of the Agent Funeral Home in Sallisaw. Mr. RICHARDS was born to Paul RICHARDS and Essie L. GREEN RICHARDS on March 30, 1917, in Bengal. He died at Muskogee on Monday, Oct. 11, at the age of 65. Survivors include the mother, Essie; three brothers, William, John and David; two sisters, Dorothy, and Sue; two step-brothers, Riley, and Ralph; and six step-sisters, May and Faye, Gertrude, Flora, Pauline and Aline.

October 24, 1982

Services for Dr. Bert H. COTTON of Pasadena, Calif.; a native of Sequoyah County, were held Saturday, Oct. 16, at 2 p.m. in the Agent Chapel in Sallisaw. The Rev. Frank Tepe officiated at the services which were under the direction of the Agent Funeral Home. Burial followed in the Sallisaw City Cemetery. Dr. COTTON was born May 26, 1911. His father was Bert COTTON Sr. On Wednesday, Oct. 13, Dr. COTTON died at the Huntington Memorial Hospital Pasedena, at the age of 71. Survivors include four children, B. Hollis, W. Michael, and Hollie D. and Bert G.; two grandchildren; and two uncles, Bob and Carl.

Services for Joe SHORE of Fort Smith, Ark., formerly of near Gans and Sallisaw, are being held Saturday, Oct. 23, at 2:30 p.m. in the Wheeler Funeral Home with the Rev. Bob Winton officiating. Burial is in the Sallisaw City Cemetery under the direction of the Wheeler Funeral Home. Mr. SHORE died Wednesday, Oct. 20. He was born aug. 1, 1891, in Indiana. He had two brothers, Sam, and John, and one sister, Margaret. He married Marie Rebecca SMITH in 1912. Mr. SHORE is survived by three of his children, Theresa, Arthur, and Zane; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, Eugene of Sallisaw who died earlier this year.

Services for Lorena Elizabeth TURMAN of Sallisaw are being held Saturday, Oct. 23, at 2 p.m. in the Agent Chapel in Sallisaw with the Rev. Monroe Lowrimore and the Rev. Preston Collins officiating. Burial is in the Sallisaw City Cemetery under the direction of the Agent Funeral Home. Mrs. TURMAN was born to John C. ANDERSON and Hassie HUTCHINS ANDERSON on March 23, 1895, in Paris, Ark. She died at Sequoyah Memorial Hospital on Wednesday, Oct. 20, at the age of 67. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Ruby and Mrs. Inez; four sons, Clayburn, Spy, Virgle and Carl; 33 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

October 27, 1982

J.R. CATO, 60, of Gore died Thursday, Oct. 28, in Muskogee General Hospital. Services are Saturday at 2 p.m. in the First Baptist Church of Gore with the Rev. Steve Lopp officiating. Burial follows in the White Chapel Cemetery northwest of Gore under the direction of the Agent Funeral Home in Sallisaw.

Services for George R.V. PHILPOT of Earlimart, Calif., originally of Sallisaw, were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 14, in the Chapel of the Congregation of Earlimart with the Rev. Perry Fraze officiating. Burial was in the North Kern Cemetery District under the direction of the Delano Mortuary, Delano, Calif. Mr. PHILPOT was born April 26, 1928, in Sallisaw. He died Monday, Oct. 11, at his home at the age of 54. Survivors include the wife, Wand Lee of Earlimart; one son, Jerry Don; one daughter, Jeanie; four grandchildren; seven brothers, Wesley, Charles, Elzie, Norman, Jack, Roy and Bill; and four sisters, Cleo, Opal, Grace and Louise.

Services for Quanah Lee SIMS of Muldrow are being held Saturday, Oct.. 30, at 2 p.m. in the Lee Cree Assembly of God Church with the Rev. Junior Kester officiating. Burial is in the Sims Family Cemetery under the direction of the Wheeler Funeral Home in Sallisaw. Mr. SIMS was born to Jesse SIMS and Ethel KILPATRICK SIMS on June 4, 1935, in Mountainburg, Ark. He died at a Fort Smith, Ark., hospital on Wednesday, Oct. 27, at the age of 47. Survivors include his wife, Ramona; two sons, Lee and Jerry; four sisters, Katie, Esta, Lena, and Marie; two brothers, Star and Jim; and many nieces and nephews.
