Mathiason's Store
The Mathiason store was located from Grimes, one-half mile west and one
and one-quarter miles north on the west side of the road. It was across
the road from Dickie Tignor’s home (2009). It belonged to Niles George
and Sarah (Olson) Mathiason. Sarah was the sister of Allen Atha’s great
grandmother Mary (Olson) Hambrook. They all came from Norway and to the
United States about 1881. Niles and Sarah had a cigar store in Chicago,
moved to Oklahoma around 1905 and had the Mathiason’s Store northwest of
Grimes before moving to Sayre where they operated a store and café.
Niles died at Sayre in 1940 and Sarah died in California in 1958. Both
are buried in the Dempsey Cemetery. They had adopted two children, a boy
and a girl.
