A.L. WEST LUMBER COMPANY OF STRONG CITY AND CHEYENNE, OK
About 1993 when the A.L. West Lumber Company held their going out of business sale at their Cheyenne location, the writer had the privilege of obtaining at auction several boxes of records which had been retained from the A.L. West enterprise at Strong City during the 1930’s. Among the records were ledger sheets listing the customers which A.L. West had at Strong City. For the historian, these records give a glimpse of life at Strong City during that time period.

Two such ledger sheets provide the costs of building a house and a barn during the depression year of 1934. Roy Chambers of Strong City evidently contracted with A.L. West Lumber Company for a turn key job of building a barn of unspecified size. The barn was built during one month beginning October 16, 1934. Total costs was $323.02 with $130 of that being labor for the building. Final payment was made on December 12, 1934. Also included was a one page contract for A.L. West Lumber Company to build a house for Guy Gabert of Durham during the same time period. The contract price was $1062.70 for materials and labor. Covered were oak flooring, wiring and felt paper on the walls.

Also included in the ledger sheets was one for the Strong City Sanitation Account. This account appears to be a record of those who received water and perhaps sewer services, if such were offered, from the city of Strong City.

Lee Wells was manager of the A.L. West Lumber Company at Strong City at this time. From the occurrence of the ledger sheet for the Strong City Sanitation Account among the ledge sheets for the lumber company, Lee Wells must have been the accountant for the city of Strong City. The billing was for $5.80, apparently for one year’s water services. (although the time period was not stated) Patrons listed were billed for one to four billing periods so evidently several were in arrears.

List of patrons were: W.C. Jones, S.W. Hill, L.L. Males, Hoyt Little, First State Bank, C.A. Lathrop, T.M. Rennolds, N.Hawkins, Herring and Young, J.H. West, M. Petty, C. Kovar, Lee Wells, J.P.
