An important event took place in 1922. There had been efforts for many years to construct a bridge across the Arkansas River between Ft Gibson and Muskogee but the lack of finances had prevented this from becoming a reality. W H Harrower as Chairman of the County Commissioners of Muskogee County proposed to the business men of Ft Gibson and Muskogee that they co-operate in the expense. This made possible traffic between Ft Gibson and Muskogee without the expense and inconvenience of using the ferries. The bridge was replace in 1969 with one permitting river traffic. In spite of the fact that the Frank Gladd Post of the American Legion initiated a campaign to restore the Stockade in time for a centennial celebration, they were unable to generate enough support, and there was no celebration as such to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the establishment of Fort Gibson. Just before going to press, Miss Oklahoma Walker has provided me with the picture which has the caption "The First church in Indian Territory, Built by Colonel Belknap at Military Post of Fort Gibson about 1854". This picture evidently appeared in a publication many years ago and seems to be the same building that is sometimes referred to as being the one that Henry Stanley taught school in. The obituary of Elsie Skates stated that she had been a member of the [Bethel A M E] "Colored Methodist Church for 76 years" which would date this church as early as 1841, since she died in 1916. There is mention of a Reverend Williamham who was pastor of this church in 1888. Other pastors of the church include: Reverend F C Mitchell, C A Sutton, M T Thomas, Reverend Austin and C L Andy. The present pastor is Reverend W S Davis. Active members through the years have included Alabama Moore, Alice Howard, P W Delioo, J M Jennings and Mr and Mrs Jess Daniels. Mrs Daniels has been district president of the conference since 1925. Reverend E M Jackson is presiding elder at the present time. [photo of A M E Church] pg 218 <complete>
