My own take on the census records:
Be prepared for your family members names to be Hickified (I made that up, lol). Your Juanita can be Wanita, Jonita, and Waneta. I know a woman that lived her life with the name Erva, she was a cousin I telephoned for further information on the family line. I asked for Eva as that's the name on her father's obituary - Eva. She informed me that that was incorrect, I had some other names wrong too; Otis was Odis, Cynthia was Sinthy, etc. To make this less story very short, we got her birth certificate and lo and behold.... she is Eva! We then took bets that Odis was really Otis, and so on. I have a ton of these stories. This is what I call the Hickified version of a name. The person that gave out the information, in this case Arkansas, had a thick accent. Thus Eva became Erva. She told me she liked Eva better and wanted to change her name. (grin) I told her she didn't have to change her name, not legally anyway, she is already Eva. When I come across a name not quite right, I have to wince, for this is not a nickname it's a hickification of a name, or is it?
