Terral Public School

Terral info.

The first school in Terral was 6-room, two-story building located in the southeast part of town on what is now the ballfield. After searching the available records and talking to the few oldtimers left that might remember, we were unable to establish the year of its construction. We estimated it to be in the 1890's.  It was opened on September 2,  1907  as a state funded school.  The principal was J.P. Scott and his wife was the primary teacher. school trustees were J. W. Colburn, Chairman, W.L. Hill, L.G Taylor, A. M. Brown, H. Winningham, and E.O Barnett. From what information we could gather, this building became unsafe for some reason and the students finished the 1921 school year in the Baptist church. Commencement exercises were held in the church that year according to a document we have found. This old school building was later torn down.

The new school building was completed in 1921 at our present location and the students moved from the Baptist church into the new building. This school was built on land donated by two old bachelors: Lee & Bill Stanfield. Our present auditorium is named for them.

These old buildings were replaced with our present high school building in 1973 and the grade school was replaced in 1984. Our last senior class graduated in May of 1987. Members of that class were: Randy Croxton, Ronnie Duke, Lynn Hill, Corey Johnson, Elsa Lleverino, Chuck Scheffield, Steven Tallon, and Kenn Wilkerson. Our high school consolidated withRyan at this time. We now have Kindergarten;through eighth grades. Our present superintendent is Don Garrison and our Board of Education consists of: Phil Bryant, President; Kendell Fleming, Vice President; and Cash Langford, clerk. The Teachers are: Gay Roper, Kindergarten; Barbara Lewis, First; & Second Grades; Kay Martin, Seventh & Eighth Grades; and Vivian Parnell, Special Education and Computers. Support employees include: Wayne Jackson, Custodian; Melba Croxton, Secretary; Louise Morrison, Head Cook; Yolanda Castillo, Cook; Midge Martin, Cook's Helper; Andrea Pollan, Aide; and Wilma Maartin, The Bus Driver.
