March 1, 1923

Trades Day
Come to Ringling on Monday, March 5, 1923. A great program is being prepared. The premiums will especially interest the women an girls. Fifty dollars worth of poultry and eggs will be given away. All is full blood stuff and a part of it is extra good grade. We will have an extra good display of registered hogs and poultry. Several brood sows and some of the hens will be delivered to the Boys and Girls Clubs members. A good offering will be sold at the free station and everyone and all their kin will be there. Secretary LONDON deserves credit for his efficient planning and we trust the weather man will be kind.

MRS. J. F. JONES visited with relatives and friends in Healdton Saturday.

JOE BAUCOM from west of town was a Ringling business and shopping visitor.

Mrs. JAMES OGILSVY who resided in Cornish for many years was a Ringling business visitor Saturday.

MISS ALMA CUMMINS of Cornish who is teaching at South Center Point school was a shopping visitor here Saturday and stated that the school was progressing nicely.

WILSON PARKER of the South Center Point community was a business caller in Ringling.


JEFF HAWKINS of the South Center Point community was a business caller in Ringling.

D. C. CARPENTER from south of Cornish was a business visitor to Ringling and stated that the Rock Island railway officials had made arrangements to run their line through his oat patch.

E. T. AWTREY and son, WILL AWTREY from the Mountain Home community, were Ringling visitors Saturday.

W. C. RICHARDSON of the Oak Grove community was transacting business in Ringling and listened to the pro and con railroad talk.

We had just heard of the death of MR. ED AULS at Healdton Friday night. Mr. Auls was a resident of this part of the country for many years and had many friends here. The cause of death was ‘flu’ and pneumonia. Burial was at Dixie cemetery.

JIM WRIGHT and DR. T. F. ALLEN of Atlee were business and professional visitors in Ringling. Dr. Allen informed us that the Rock Island Railway would likely miss Atlee.

ALBERT TURNER and family were shopping in Ringling Saturday.

J. E. MCCROREY of the Union Hill community was a shopping and business visitor in Ringling Saturday. He thinks the prospects for a bumper crop are good for 1923.

MARVILL BELL at one time an employee of Collier Bros. , but now with DON COCRAX of Ardmore was a visitor for a few minutes while making the run on the O. N. M. & P. railway from Healdton to Ardmore.

M. L. ALLEN and JESS JENKINS of the Grady community were visiting in Ringling and telling of the advancement of their part of the country. They stated that F. S. LEBEAU and ED OWENS were preparing to surprise the entire country by prompting a railway from Grady to Wilson via Cornish. They stated there had been some misunderstanding caused by Mr. LeBeau wanting to build an electric line and save time and expense but Mr. Owens said we will build an old reliable steam railway or none at all…

Music Appreciation Club

We are glad to hear that R. WILLIAMS is recovering from his long illness.

SHIRLEY and LEWIS WILLIAMSON have returned to school after a week of illness.

MISS JONES has greatly enlarged the high school library since she has been at the head of the English department. She has organized a book club, each member paying a small fee for which is applied to the purchase of new books. We are indebted to the Class of 1923 for their gift to the library, which consisted of a fourteen volume set of the works of Charles Dickens and novels by Victor Hugo.

The debate team has begun work on their affirmative side of the immigration question, in preparation for the contest with Lawton which will occur in March. The debate will be held in Ringling.

Our second basketball team was eliminated in the semi-finals at the Healdton tournament. The following men represented Ringling: BARNEY ROBERTS, SHIRLEY WILLIAMSON, JAMES DUBOSE, MORRIS HAMMOND, VONLEY HAMM. WYMAN HENRY substituted for Morris Hammond at the end of the first half.

Fine Arts Recital
MISS CALHOUN and MRS. ROLLER presented a number of their students in recital: JOYCE FITZPATRICK, HERSCHEL JONES, DOROTHY GRIFFIN, CUB JACKSON, BESSIE HARVIS, MELBA HARRIS, LUCILLE MCCRORY, LAVERNE SHERLEY, MILDRED DAVIS, FRANCIS ANNETTE ELLISON, BONNIE MARIE SHORFEY

Dr. GRANFIELD of Grady died Sunday with heart failure.

TOM MILLER from southwest of Cornish was shopping in Ringling.

DICK MCCURRY of the Claypool community was a Ringling shopper.

W. E. ROEHE was a Ringling shopper.

Atlee Items
MR. FRANK DRISKELL of Waurika is in Atlee finding how much people need before they can pay taxes.

Atlee community was saddened on hearing of the death of DR. GRANFIELD of Grady as he had many friends here.

H. W. PICKETT was a Ringling visitor.

ALLEN & HANKS, well drillers, have completed a well on Mr. HANK’s place and are now on one for Mr. Allen.

Mr. & Mrs. SAM BATEMAN and children are visiting his mother, MRS. JIM WRIGHT.

Mountain Home items
The rain was welcomed by all in this community and most are busy farming.

WILLIAM PRYOR is reported off the sick list this week.

MR. ABBEY, who was scheduled to talk on ‘Chickens’ Monday night, failed to make appearance due to unexpected car trouble.

TERRY MORRIS preached to a good sized audience last Saturday night.

MR. RILEY attended the basketball tournament at Healdton.

Zaneis items
The basketball tournament at Healdton was a success from every view point. The boys teams from: Dixie, Addington, Healdton, Rexroat, Zaneis, Love Valley, Waurika, Woodward and Marietta’s second team. Four schools sent girls teams, Loco, Waurika, Rexroat, and Zaneis. First boys team was Loco; second team was Marietta. First girls team was Zaneis. Zaneis is justly proud of her success since this is the first year for a girls team. The Zaneis girls were: IVA MOORE, MINNIE WHITE--forwards; CASSIE TUCKER, LILLIAN CAVENS, ELLA WELCH--guards. Centers: DECIMA LATEN, ALMA STAFFORD. MISS MARY LEE, our third grade teachers, is coach of the girls team and deserves great praise.

A surprise party was given at the home of W. A. DANIELS last Monday in honor of MENTIE DANIELS. Those present were: RUBY HUDDLESTON, JEWEL HUDDLESTON, ARCHIE FULLER, COY LAMB, ELMER LAMB, HAZEL SMITH, SANSON SESSIONS, ARNOLD TALLY, JOHN ROBERTS, MABEL TALIAFERRO, MONET EVERETT, HUGH OGLESBY, TED TUNE, EVERETT EPSON.

The Plerian Literary society met in regular session last Thursday with president, STELLA CRAFT in the chair. ELIAN WORSHAM, TOLLIE DANIELS, LARRY DOUGHTY, INEZ CUDD, SUSIE MARTIN, GERALDINE JONES, ERNESTINE KIMBRELL, MRS. GEORGIA SCOTT, STELLA CRAFT, GRACE KIMBRELL, CLEM REEVES, OPAL TIPPS, AVA GLADLEY, CELESTE CALDWELL.

MRS. RAY WATTS of El Reno has been visiting her parents, Rev. and Mrs. J. E. SMITH of Zaneis.

MRS. ROGERS has been ill with bronchitis.

REV. WILSON, pastor of the Wilson Methodist Church, conducted services last Friday.

CORBIN OGLIVIE met with an accident on the basketball court last Tuesday.

W. A. NELSON of the Mountain Home community was a Ringling visitor.

RED. ED STROOPS of Cornish who has been holding a protracted meeting at Rock Springs returned home.

Little MELVILE HACKLER, son of Mr and Mrs. W. H. HACKLER of Cornish, is reported ill with pneumonia.

WILL KELLER visited old time friends at Cornish and staying with Mr and Mrs. D. L. GRAM.

The manager at the Cornish Orphans’ Home has installed a Delco Light and Power Plant.

W. A. GOODE, merchant at Cornish, is sick with the ‘flu.’

T. D. GOLDSMITH, rural carrier on Route Three, says if the railway goes on the line they have staked out, someone will have move mail boxes.

BERRY SESSUMS of the Zaneis community was a Ringling visitor.

BURT THACHER who moved to the Loco community two years ago has moved back to Ringling.

O. O. HOLLINGSWORTH made a record of travel and business when he left his home at Ringling at 6:30 Sunday, drove to Chickasha, helped to invoice a stock of goods which he has purchased there, and motored back to his home and was safely housed at 11 p.m. He states he will move his family there this week and will make Chickasha his home.

ROBERT JOHNS made a business run to Ardmore.

Mr and Mrs. HICK WALDON came to Ringling Monday to visit her mother, Mrs. GIBSON and other relatives and friends, They have been making their home in the northeastern part of the state for 2 or 3 years.

JOHN CARTER from the Wirt community was visiting here.

Prof. S. N. SUTHERLAND of Dixie was a business visitor in Ringling.

C. E. LOCKWOOD from South Center Point community was a shopping and business visitor here.

CLIFF COLLIER, north of town, was a Ringling business visitor.

ALBERT WALKER, a tank builder employed by one of the large oil companies, will go to Ponca City field soon. His last work was in the Smackover field.

JOHN IRBY, formerly of Ringling, but now or Ardmore, was visiting here.

JOE DILLARD made a ‘round up’ of some of his cattle in the Courtney community. He stated that the flu was fierce in that community.

MRS. MCQUAID and little BILLIE HARRIS left for Oklahoma City where MRS. MCQUAID will make her home with her son and his wife who recently moved from Ringling.

GEORGE GATIS from northwest of town visited here.

C. M. ELDER, at one time a real estate broker here, but now of Ardmore, visited here.

Mr and Mrs. C. M. GRAHAM went to Wilson and visited her brother, MONROE BAKER, and his family. Mrs. Baker was ill and Mrs. Graham stayed to attend the sick.

MISS ANNA ROFF was a visitor to Ardmore.

MRS. E. J. BEAN was visiting with friends and relatives.

Morris-Powell Marriage
On the March 8, 1923, TOT MORRIS, of the firm J.H. MORRIS & Sons of Ringling, and MISS JAQUELINE POWELL were married in Ringling. Mr. Morris is the son of J. H. MORRIS, was reared here, and is an industrious and leader in his set. The bride is the daughter of MRS. G. W. TUCKER of East Plainview community and is a charming and accomplished young lady--a leader in the younger set. They will make their home in Ringling for the present.

JAMES F. GARNER and O. GARDNER, from ‘between the Mud Creeks,’ were Ringling shoppers. J. F. said, ’I follow the old custom--plant potatoes on the 17th of March and go fishing on the 18th.’ He said he raises potatoes every year and is a fair fisherman.

DR. A. G. JONES, once practicing here, but moved to Coalgate several years ago, was a friendly and business leader in Ringling Saturday. Mrs. JONES is the daughter of MRS. W. M. FOLSOM who resides west of Ringling and the family will visit there several days before going to the west where the doctor hopes he will regain his health.
