Last Sunday, September 1, the
frail bark of Tim Shanahan slipped Its moorings and sailed away
across the sea that separates Time from Eternity.
Tim Shanahan, descended from that sturdy Irish stock that
knows no wavering or turning about, and that remains faithful in season and out
of season. If Tim was your friend it made no difference to him what other people
said or did. He remained as true as a plumb line.
Tim Shanahan came to the Cherokee Nation when Texas Longhorns
roamed the range at will and when people traveled at night during the summer
months on account of the number and ferocity of the “green head” horse men and
dead and wild turkeys were plentiful and the “drum” of the prairie chicken made
a continual melodious roar during the early morning hours of sprint time.
He was one of those early pioneers who married into the
Cherokee Tribe, and, like many others who were adopted into the tribe in those
early days, became as loyal to the tribal laws and institutions as any one of
Indian blood. Loyalty was one of his outstanding virtues.
His wife, Jeanie Shanahan, has been one of the most efficient
and faithful political workers of Craig county for years. his brother, Ed
Shanahan, is the oldest merchant in Vinita in point of continuous business. His
sisters, Mary Norfleet, Mrs. Pat Ryan and Mrs. Fred Riddle have the Shanahan,
traits of loyalty and dependability. The sons and the daughters, Tim, Ben, and
John and Lenora and Genevieve are of the same sturdy stock. Their word is better
than a chattel mortgage and nothing is too good for them to do for a friend.
Craig county can ill afford to lose such men as Tim Shanahan
but when the inevitable hour arrives, the farm, the office, the work shop,
friends, relatives and family must be left behind and the journey into the Great
Beyond must be made alone. Nothing
we may say or do will assuage the grief of those left behind: only
God can wipe away I all tears and heal the bruised heart. Our
sympathy goes out to the bereaved family and we pray that God will
help and sustain
—A FRIEND.
