Edw. Shanahan Dies at Vinita


Pioneer Druggist Had Operated Store at Vinita Since
Year of 1885


 

   Funeral services for Edward Shanahan Sr., V. who died at his home In Vinita at 5 o'clock Saturday morning, were held last Monday morning at 10 o'clock at the Holy Ghost church, with Rev. T. F. Kramer, pastor, officiating.

    Shanahan twice mayor of Vinita, and druggist here since 1885, has been in ill health for the past several months. He came to Vinita with his parents in 1878, and for a few years resided on a farm near Vinita. He studied pharmacy and in 1885 opened a drug store.

    In 1901 and 1902 he served as mayor of the city, filling out John Sheehan's term, and was instrumental in having passed several ordinances perfecting the organization of the city government, which are still in effect today.

    Again In 1908, he was elected mayor, and advocated and had approved a water system und public lighting equipment for Vinita.

    Sanahan was born In Minnesota. and was one of the oldest residents from point of years spent here, in the town at the time of his death. In addition to being mayor he has also served on the Vinita city council. He was many times referred to as "Vinita's most useful citizen" and continued taking an active interest in happenings in Vinita until his death. He had been able to attend his duties at his drug store until his death, which came as a surprise to many who had talked to him at his store Thursday.

    He Is survived by his widow, three sons, Tim, of Coffeyville, Kansas; Pat, who was associated with him In his drug store here, and Ed, Jr., and one daughter, Mrs. W. L. Ellers, Alva, Okla.; three sisters, Mrs. Pat Ryan, Vinita; Mrs. Joe Norbleat, Ketchum, and Mrs. June Riddle, of Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Business houses of Vinita closed in respect to Mr. Shanahan, from 10 until 11 Monday morning.

    Father Harold Pierce, of Guymon. Okla., sang the mass. He was assisted by Father Joe Busse, Nowata; Father T. F. Kramer, of Vinita; and Father George Amon, of Miami.

    Pallbearers at the services were Page Crahan Craig Goodpaster, L. L. Roberts. Charles Schneider, Roy Warner. and John Lonergan.

    Honorary pallbearers were: W H. Kornegay, Billy Simms, Harry J. Campbell, Dr. Louis Bagby, Sam Ridenhour, Dr. C. W. Griffith, C. A. Wasmund. J. H.. Wimer, Sam Leforce, U. F. Brittain, Oscar Trott, C. H. Reutemann. A. H. Bertram, Henry Miller. "Sunny" Knight. Jim Highland. L. G. Thomason, Charles Collins, T. F. Lonergan, J. A. Wlse. C. H. Good-paster. J. A. Wise, W. M. Malone. S. E. Wallen. W. F. Friend, Felix Cowan, W. P. Thompson. Lee Webb. Torn Ridgway. Ewing Halsell. C. F. Nash. and Rudy Ruark.

    Following the services, interment was made in the Fairview cemetery at Vinita, under direction of the Reid Luginbuel Funeral Horne.
