Fri. 13, Mon. 16 & Tues. 17 Sept, 2002 HOWELL, ELLEN Services for Ellen Janet Howell, 82 of Anadarko were held at 11 o'clock today at the Anadarko Assembly of God Church with the Rev. Don Stewart, pastor, officiating. Mrs. Howell was born June 23, 1920 in Alden to Walter and Myrtle (Mulkey) Barger and passed from this life Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2002 at Integris Baptist Medical Center in Oklahoma City following a two-week illness. On Jan. 22, 1938 she and Glendell F. Howell were married in Lawton. He preceded her in death Nov. 12, 1979. She was also preceded in death by her parents and her sister and brother-in-law, Audrey and Dote Dietrich. Mrs. Howell grew up in Apache and attended schools there. While she and her husband were married, the couple lived in Apache until moving to Oakland, Calif. where they both worked in the shipyards during World War II. They came back to Apache, then moved to Norman and 52 years ago came back to Anadarko. She worked at the former local Safeway Store for 28 years. Mrs. Howell was a graduate of the Chickasha Beauty College and was a member of the Assembly of God Church of Anadarko. She enjoyed sewing, gardening and talking on the phone. She loved her little dog Nickie. Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Lanita and Ronnie Slater of Anadarko; her son and daughter-in-law, Monty and Mary Howell of Binger; eight grandchildren, Steve Clark and his wife, Barbara, of Sterling, Va., Terrie Bradford and her hus-band, Mike, of Chickasha, Traci Barger and her husband, Kevin, Teresa Hendricks and her husband, Justin, and Terry Dickerson, all of Anadarko, Jeff Howell of Watonga, Cody Blood of New York City, N.Y and Jody Blood of Fort Carson, Colo.; 13 great grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Jenita Howell of Apache; her grandchildren, Gary, Kay, Pat and Danny; other relatives and many loving friends. Sept. 13 & Weekend, Sept. 14-15, 2002 BOWLING, JOYCE BINGER - Services for Joyce Bowling, 70, of Binger will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 15, 2002 at the Binger Baptist Church with the Rev. Mary Ingram officiating. Mrs. Bowling was born Feb. 11 1932 east of Binger to Orville and Lena (Rogers) Shoptaw and passed away Thursday, Sept. 12, 2002 at her home in Binger. She was preceded in death by her parents. Mrs. Bowling graduated from Binger High School and attended Hills Business School in Oklahoma City. She was united in marriage to Bob Bowling March 11, 1950 at Wichita Falls, Texas. The couple had always worked together. She was a bookkeeper at the Coop Gin and they owned and operated Bob Bowling Chevrolet in Binger for 30 years. She loved spending time with her grandchildren, watching NASCAR and shopping on the Home Shopping Network. Mrs. Bowling was a member of the Binger Baptist Church. Survivors include her husband of the home; three children, Jody Bowling of Mustang, Kathy Bowling, Benny Bowling and his wife, Terrye, all of Binger; eight grandchildren, Stephanie Jones and her husband, Jason, of Norman, Justin Bowling of Mustang, Amanda Van Huss and her husband, Chuck, of Enid, Blake Bowling, Rylee, Rainye, Cade and Caylee Roth, all of Binger; one great- granddaughter, Jada Jones of Norman; one brother, Dale Shoptaw of Newkirk; one nephew, Ronnie Shoptaw of Ponca City and one niece, Lita Kelley of Fairfax. Sept. 17, 2002 SAGE, MYRTLE GRACEMONT - Services for for-mer Gracemont resident Myrtle Exa Sage, 91, of the Binger Nursing Home since 1999 will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2002 at the Gracemont Church of Christ with Mrs. Sage's nephew, George Dale Janda of Laguna Niguel, Calif. and her minister, Timothy Sparks, officiating. Mrs. Sage was born Sept. 3, 1911 in a covered wagon near Juno, Texas in Val Verde County to Robert L. and Ida Elizabeth (McBroom) and passed from this life Sunday, Sept. 15, 2002 in Binger following a lengthy illness. She and Alex Robert Sage were married on Oct. 8, 1933 in Verden. Mr. Sage preceded her in death on July 8, 1993. She was also preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Edith Janda and Veva Fields; two brothers, Lloyd Riddle and Herbert Riddle; one grand-daughter, Deborah Epton; two sons-in-law, Bill Epton and Letcher Slemp; eight brothers-in- law, Walter Janda, Tom Fields, Dennis Janda, Bill Sage, Bert Sage, Virgil Howard, Otto Sawyer and Jack Sage; three sisters-in-law, Al-ice Howard, Nancy Gaston and Mattie Sawyer; three nephews, Tim Riddle, Curtis Sage and Alton Sage and one niece, Vivian Snelson. Mrs. Sage came with her family to Caddo County in 1926 from Old Glory, Texas. She attended schools at Spring Creek, Whitebread, Strong and Anadarko. She and her husband raised their family of six children and farmed five miles east of Gracemont. She planted big gardens and enjoyed canning the vegetables and fruit. She also had flower gardens and was a talented seamstress, making patterns from newspapers to make dresses for her daughters. Mrs. Sage did upholstery and knew how to hang wallpaper. She loved to read, especially the Bible. She played harmonica and could play a few tunes on the fiddle, but would sit back and listen when her children and grandchildren would play music and sing. She was a very devoted mother and was "The Wind Beneath Their Wings." She looked forward to visitors, especially her children and grandchildren. She had been a resident of the Binger Nursing Home since 1999. Mrs. Sage was a faithful member of the Gracemont Church of Christ, where she taught children's classes and loved singing praises to the Lord. Mrs. Humphreys was born April 9, 1901 in Carter to Amos and Mary (Maxwell) Dabney and passed from this life early Monday morning, Sept. 16, 2002 following a lengthy illness. On Feb. 20, 1926 she married Allen Upchurch. He died Dec. 7, 1930. She later married John Humphreys on March 20, 1935. He died in 1945. Mrs. Humphreys was also preceded in death by her parents, three brother and three sisters. Ms. Humphreys had lived in Anadarko since 1925. She worked as a cook for many years and retired from the Steakhouse Cafeteria at the age of 75. Mrs. Taylor was born May 13, 1908 to Henry and Amelia Marxsen near Bridgeport and died Thursday, Sept. 19, 2002 in the Weatherford hospital. She was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Ted N. and Donald L.; one sister, Dorothy McClure and three brothers, Henry Jr., Fred and George. Mrs. Taylor attended Bridgeport schools during her early years and graduated from Hinton High School in 1926. She attended Hill Business College in Oklahoma City before returning to Hinton to work as a bookkeeper T.J. Stewart Lumber Co. She married Albert William Taylor of Hinton, Nov. 21, 1929. She worked as a bookkeeper at First State Bank for many years and retired in 1973. Mrs. Taylor was a life-long member of the St. John’s Lutheran Church of Hinton. Survivors include one daughter-in-law, Mrs. Ted Taylor of Billings, Mont.; three sons and daughters-in-law, Gordon Max and Doris of Tucson, Ariz., Neal and Helen of Wichita, Kan. and Robert and Sybil of Little Rock, Ark.; two sisters, Helene Schaefer of Paramus, N.J. and Nora Dernoncourt of Oklahoma City; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Burial will be in the Hinton Cemetery under the direction of Hinton-Turner Funeral Home. Weekend Sept. 21 & 22, 2002 SMITH, NAPPY Memorial services for Paul Dewayne “Nappy” Smith, 60, of Anadarko will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 23, 2002 at the First Christian Church of Anadarko with the pastor, Derrek Belase, officiating. Mr. Smith was born Oct. 16, 1941 in Anadarko to Pearl “Blackie” Patterson and passed from this life Thursday, Sept. 19, 2002 at his home west of Anadarko following a year-long illness. He was preceded in death by his mother. Mr. Smith grew up in Anadarko and attended Anadarko schools. He spent a year in the U.S. Marine Corps and when he returned he farmed for a while. He and the former Mary French Ahboah were married in Wichita Falls, Texas on July 30, 1981. He graduated from the Oklahoma Barber College in Tulsa and then taught at the Oklahoma Barber College in Oklahoma City for three years before opening his own barber shop in Binger. He later worked at True Value Hardware and then opened an auto-detail shop at his home on Caddo Road. Mr. Smith attended the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma at Chickasha and received his bachelor of arts degree in sociology in 1990. He was one of the first employees hired at the Cornell Correctional Facility in Hinton and for eight years he was an investigator and case manager there. He left there to work for the Oklahoma Department of Human Services, Juvenile Services and then went to work for Sheriff Gene Cain at the Caddo County Courthouse. He worked there until last month when his failing health required him to retire. Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Kendall Brent Smith. of Lawton and Michael Cross of Okiahoma City; one step-son, Robert Ahboah of Norman; five grandchildren;. one brother and sister-in-law, Troy and Diane Tallent of Anadarko and nephew, T.J. Tallent of Anadarko; four brothers-in-law, Edgar French of Fort Cobb, William French of Chickasha, Reynolds French of Norman and Charles French of Oklahoma City; 17 nieces and nephews who were very dear to him; a very special friend, Philip Smith of Anadarko; other relatives and a large circle of loving friends. Services are under the direction of Steverson Funeral Home of Anadarko. The family has suggested memorial donations be sent to the American Cancer Society. -----
