It was predicted some time ago that the large list of marriages in Caddo county for December was in some way influenced by the Yuletide spirit. COBB WEDNESDAY Abner Green Smedley, pioneer resident of Fort Cobb, died at the home of his son Henry G. Smedley, Wednesday evening, March 21, liking two days being ninety-two years of age. He was born March 23, 1836 near Atlanta, Ga., where he resided during his early life. He moved to Tennessee with his parents during his early manhood and married Amanda Garrett in 1857. To this union twelve children were born, six girls and six boys, three sons of whom survive, as follows: Thomas D. Smedley of California; John S. Smedley of Amarillo, Tex.; Henry G. Smedley of Fort Cobb, age 65, with whom deceased made his home. Besides the three sons he is survived by fifteen grandchildren; forty-one great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Smedley passed to the Great Beyond on Now. 7, 1912 at the age of 78 years, having been born Nov. 7, 1834. Abner G. Smedley enlisted in the Civil War in 1861 from Arkansas and served until the close of the war in the 2nd Arkansas Calvalry. After the war he moved to Texas where he reared his family. He came to Oklahoma in 1901 and after the drawing bought a relinquishment just west of Fort Cobb on the north side of the Washita River where he lived until some years later when he moved to Fort Cobb, where he resided until his death. Funeral services were held at the home of his son, Henry G. Smedley, Friday noon by G.F. Wilson, a Bible student of Oklahoma City, at which a large crowd of relatives and friends were present. "To know 'Uncle Abner' was to be his friend for he was at all times loyal to his country, his family and his friends, and was a real citizen in every community in which he lived", said a life-long friend. Deceased was accorded a military funeral with members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post of Anadarko in charge, assisted by members of the American Legion. Officers of the V.F.W. post officiating were Otis Farrington, commander; Joe Dorley, senior vice-commander; Emil Alm, Jr., vice commander; Mike Caruso of Fort Cobb, bugler. A fellow by the name of Jim Johnson, who with his family lived close by in a tent, is said to have committed the crime and is being sought by officers of this section. As though by a quirk of fate each of the slain men received a bullet hole in the left side of the head. Evidence also shows that two of them were killed while they slept. A man by the name of Looney, who, with another witness, is being held, escaped with only a knife wound. It is said the killer ran out of cartridges. The reason for the shooting affray remains a mystery. So far as can be learned no motive for the crime exists. Sheriff George Nixon and deputies and County Attorney William McFadyen were called to Carnegie early Monday morning to hold an inquest over the bodies. The dead men were identified as "Curley" Dale, a Perry, Oklahoma mechanic who came there several days ago to work; Noah Williams, a blacksmith; and Walter Swigart, a concrete worker. Walter Looney, whose stab wounds were not believed serious, accused Jim Johnson, who was being sought for shooting the three and stabbing him. A search is being conducted for Johnson and others who are believed to have been present at a gathering in the railroad cut. Looney was the only one found who could tell anything of the affair. He said a number of men had been drinking, and that two or three of them became helplessly intoxicated. Johnson stabbed him as he was caring for the helpless men, he said, and he heard shots as he staggered away. The coroner's inquest opened at the scene of the crime, which was littered with evidence of eating and drinking, such as cracker boxes, tin cans and bottles. After the jury had viewed the scene, an undertaker was permitted to remove the three victim's bodies. Arrest of Johnson was ordered following an inquest at which Walter Looney, stabbed in the brawl, testified Johnson attacked him and then "started shooting". Looney fled, saying he heard a shot as he ran. Search for Johnson was begun by officers immediately. Looney said he and Johnson began in a row over the gun, when Johnson began flashing it at the party. All had been drinking, he said. There had been no quarrel between Johnson and the three slain men, Looney said. Five cartridges were found where the shooting occured and five wounds were found in the bodies. Dale was shot twice in the leg and once through the head. The others were shot in the head. ============================================================================= April 12, 1928 Carnegie Slayer Suspect Is Held By Officers at Enid Sheriff Nixon Writes Tribune That Jim Johnson Was Apprehended in Rooming House Monday The Tribune is in receipt of a communication from Sheriff Nixon stating that Jim Johnson the man accused of the recent killing of three men on a railroad grade near Carnegie, is being held at Enid and that they will being him to Anadarko within the next few days. According to information at hand, Sheriff Nixon had notified officers at Enid that Johnson had a sister living there. It seems that this lead resulted in the man's capture Monday. He was found at an Enid rooming house alone, unarmed, and in a peaceable mood. According to Mr. Nixon, the man admits he lived at Carnegie in a tent, but denies he did the killing. The bodies of the three men, Walt Swaggart, William Dale and Clarence Williams, were found the morning after the shooting beside railroad tracks. Henry Nelson, who said he had engaged the drinking party with the men, told Carnegie police that Johnson had shot them in the course of a brawl. Johnson has admitted his idenity. Sheriff Baker of Enid said, and has admitted also that he lived in a tent near the scene of the shooting. When arrested Johnson was at liberty on appeal bond following his conviction at Cordell on a charge of assault to murder. ============================================================================== Thursday, May 10, 1928 Vol. 27 No. 42 MARRIAGE LICENSES May 2--BERT P. This talk of a lull in the matrimonial market throughout the United States is all static to the good folk of this community. December bids fair to rival the much bragged about month of June for marriages. According to the records of this county some eighty discarded single blessedness and marched to the altar during December. It was thought that the court clerk did a fair business in November when seventy-five took the vows, but oh my, eighty is still more. The cause for so many taking a chance during the twelfth month of an otherwise uneventful year is not known. Your guess is, perhaps, as good as ours, if not better.
