Caddo Co. OK - Newspaper El Reno Globe Submitted By: Nancy Charlton ============================================================================== 8 Dec 1899 Fatal Shooting Another tragedy has been enacted and another man killed. Last evening about sundown John Curtis, son of Robt. Curtis, shot and fatally wounded N.B. Thompson and shot Henry Smith in the arm making a serous but not fatal wound. The shooting occurred about six miles southwest of the city, in the public road, as all the parties were going home from El Reno. The exact facts of the shooting we do not know at this time, but there are a number of events, which led up to the trouble that resulted in the shooting. Thompson and Curtis are related by marriage and there has been trouble between them for a long time. John Curtis lives on his father's ranch, in the CADDO county, and Smith and the Thompsons live on this side of the river, in Canadian county. Curtis claims that Smith and Thompson had broken into his house and stolen a number of things. Curtis went before the grand jury and bills of indictment were returned yesterday against them for house breaking and larceny. They were placed under arrest, but gave bond for their appearance and had started for home. It is said that both Smith and Thompson had made threats against the life of young Curtis and said that they would kill him if he went before the grand jury to have them indicted. Thompson was shot in the body the ball entering near the navel and coming out at his back. He died last night at 1 o'clock. Curtis gave himself up to the sheriff and is now in jail. They are all young men, none of them being over 24 years of age. ==============================================================================
