Caddo County - Newspapers Submitted by: Sandy Miller ***************************************************************** EL RENO DAILY TRIBUNE VOL. NO. 23 Black Brute Criminally Assaults White Girl And Then Murders Her Susie Church, the 16-year-old daughter of Fred Church, living Southwest of Tedda, was brutally assaulted and murdered yesterday afternoon about 3 o' clock by a young g Negro. The black brute slashed the throat of his victim from ear to ear, almost severing the head. The crime was committed on the public road leading north from Cogar, in Caddo County. The girl was returning home horseback from Cogar, where she had gone on an errand and was forced to pass a field, where the Negro was at work hoeing cotton. The fiend sprang out at her, pulled her from her horse and after killing her he drew her body to one side of the road and hid it in the weeds. When the horse returned home riderless, Mrs. Church felt that some accident had befallen her daughter, and mounting the horse she rode rapidly to Cogar, where she was told that the girl had started home but a short time before. She retraced her steps homeward, and when but a short distance from the scene of the murder, she met her husband, who was returning from a neighbors and knew nothing of the occurrence. As they passed the road they noticed a pool of blood in the roadway and upon investigation, found the body of their daughter nearby. As soon as news of the crime became known, possess were formed by the neighbors and the murder was soon found at the home of a Negro in the vicinity of the crime, as he had made no attempt to escape. When the members of the posse attempted to take him into custody the black brute put up a fierce resistance, but was soon overpowered. His clothing was blood stained and he still had the bloody knife in his possession with which he had committed the terrible deed. He was closely guarded during the night and the sheriff of Caddo county arrived at 3 O'clock this morning and took the criminal to the county jail at Anadarko. Reports had been current during the night that possess were forming to lynch the murderer, but he was not molested. Other reports were circulated to the effect that the Negroes of that section of the county were arming themselves but on investigation this was found to be without foundation.
