Caddo County - Newspapers =============================================== Anadarko Democrat Thursday, Aug. 11, 1904 Vol. 8 No. 207 page 3 column 1 ARE WE TO HAVE A COURTHOUSE For Anadarko And Caddo County And What Has Become of Our Court House Funds. In a recent issue the Democrat referred to the town lot funds which congress provided should be expended under the direction of the Secretary of the Interior. Not a cent of this fund has been expended at the instance of the county commissioners - except for the county jail - and the county still has $35,000 for a courthouse which ought to be somewhere under Hitchcocks control for the benefit of Caddo county. It was announced some months ago that several thousand was used in building and equipping a jail, the exact amount being unknown, as no statement was furnished by the Secretary to the board of commissioners showing the amount. The principal blame for the money (ex)penditure of those funds for county improvements rests entirely upon the Secretary of the Interior. No statement has been made to our county officials during the past year, except one of his engineers stating that "there would not be enough money left after building the court house to build a jail." This is not an official statement. The jail cells which are second to none, were bought at a big expense, and placed in a "shack" on the public square a constant invitation to the fire fiend. It takes rank right beside the court house and the pest house. To a certainty the tax payers of Caddo county are being defrauded of their just rights. We are entitled to a court house. We are not talking to hear ourselves and we know what the people demand that some effective steps be taken to secure these improvements. By motive and intelligent action the city authorities have secured the passage of the sewer bonds and now have the waterworks under way. The expenses from the latter comes from the lot fund. Why don't our County Commissioners make Hitchcock disgorge? Stop this red tape business and get to work. Nearly six months to wait for specifications for a $30,000 court house! There are half a dozen architects in Anadarko who could prepare gilt edged ones in less than a weeks time. This "specification business" is a deliberate falsehood and the man who made it knows he is a liar. The people had as well be robbed directly as to be robbed by incompeten(c)y and laziness. The time for action has arrived. The people are entitled to a court house. It seems that our endowment fund will be taken either by dishonesty or by incompetency. The responsibility of giving just and good government as well as receiving the benefit from office holders rests on the party in power. August, the month in which Hitchcock said these specifications would be ready is here. If he don't keep his word make him get those specifications, get the advertisements for bids, get the Court House. We have paid the price and lets have it. ----------------------------------------------------------- Anadarko Democrat Thursday, December 17, 1904 Vol. 4 No. 17 page 4 column 2 OUR COURTHOUSE Under an associated press dispatch the public is advised under date Dec. 10 that "The Secretary of the Interior awarded today the contract for the construction of courthouses and jails in Lawton and Anadarko, Ok. to L. Crosby & Son of Kansas City. The courthouse and jail at Lawton are to cost $25,010 and $11,454 respectively, and the courthouses and jail at Anadarko $26,878 and $11,825 respectively." This comes as especially good news to the town of Anadarko, as well as to the entire county. Our courts have been much hampered in the discharge of their duties by lack of proper rooms in which to conduct their business, for more than three years now. Juries have been discommoded in their work while the court has been hindered in many ways in its endeavor to keep abreast of the ever increasing courtwork of the county. Not the least of the serious condition is the absence of any protection to many of the valuable records of the county, some of which if destroyed by fire, could not be replaced at any cost. While the delay has been a tedious one we can afford to forgive and forget if the work be pushed to a speedy completion. ------------------------------------------------------------ The Daily Democrat Thursday, March 8, 1906 Vol. 5 No. 173 page 1 column 6 NEW QUARTERS FOR OFFICERS After Nearly Five Years of Waiting we Have Handsome Building The county commissioners have accepted the new court house and the officers are moving in as fast as possible. They have been scattered over the city for four years and are naturally delighted at their new quarters. The building will be handsomely furnished and when the taxpayers come to the county seat in the future they will see a court house that we can all feel proud of. Another thing people of Caddo county can congratulate themselves on is this building did not cost the taxpayers a cent. When the district court convenes here April 9 it will not be necessary to go to a church. -------------------------------------------------
