OK Newspaper - Anadarko Tribune Submitted By Sandy Miller =========================================================== The Anadarko Tribune Thursday, June 7, 1928 Vol. 27 No. 46 OBITUARY - WILLIAM COLLIER WILLIAM COLLIER, son of ELIZA and IZIAH COLLIER, was born on January 27, 1868, near Lexington, Ky., and departed this life on May 30, 1928, at the Chickasha hospital after a short illness of flu followed by pneumonia, aged 60 years, 4 months and 3 days. On Dec. 24, 1891, he was united in marriage to MISS MARCIE LITTLEBRIDGE at Oswego, Kans., who preceded him to the great beyond on May 4, 1910. To this happy union were born twelve children--six boys, four of whom are living, and six girls, three of whom are living--as follows: ROBERT of Portland, Ore.; CURTIS, EARL and EARNEST of Fort Cobb; MRS. FRED KUNTZE of Broken Arrow, Okla.; MRS. FRED OKERMAN and MISS EVA of Fort Cobb. He is also survived by ten grandchildren, one brother, CHARLIE COLLIER of Eadler, Colo., three sisters, MRS. MATTIE BROWNWELL of Colorado Springs, Colo., MRS. JIM BENNETT and MRS. JOE BRYAN, and his aged mother, all of Cherryvale, Kans. The advanced age of his mother, who is past 91 years old, prevented her from being here at the services. Mr. Collier was converted while a young man with the Baptist church, of which denomination he was a faithful worker until God called him home. On Sept. 10, 1924, he united with the church at Fort Cobb. Mr. Collier was a kind father, a good neighbor, and in losing him this community is deeply grieved. Funeral services were held Friday afternoon, June 21, at the Baptist Church in Fort Cobb, conducted by his former pastor, his last request, REV. EVANS of Shawnee, Okla., and a large circle of relatives and friends followed his remains to their last resting place by the side of his loved ones in the Pleasant View cemetery. The floral offerings were beautiful. Besides the above named relatives this good man leaves a host of Friends to mourn his going. To the sorrowing relatives we extend our Deepest sympathy. EVA BONCILE GOFORTH EVA BONCILE GOFORTH died Monday, June 4, 1928, at 9:35 a.m. at the family residence, 303 East Central Boulevard, aged 10 months and 16 days. God came and called the sweetest rose. Interment was in the Anadarko cemetery. Infant Firebaugh The little INFANT of MR. and MRS. W.C. FIREBAUGH of Gracemont died and was buried in the Gracemont cemetery Sunday afternoon. Mrs. Ellen Burdock MRS. ELLEN BURDOCK died at the home of her daughter, MRS. FRED NORCROSS, on South Fifth Street, Sunday night. Funeral services were conducted at the home Monday afternoon by REV. SAM D. TAYLOR. Interment was in Elmwood Cemetery, six miles south of Mountain View. Eva Boncile Goforth EVA BONCILE GOFORTH died at the home of her parents, MR. and MRS. S.G. GOFORTH, Monday morning, June 4. Funeral services were conducted at the Spivey apartments Tuesday morning at 10:30 by REV. SAM D. TAYLOR and interment was in the Anadarko Cemetery. All the above funerals were under the direction of Farmer & Grimmett, funeral directors. CADDO COUNTY CORRESPONDENCE Broxton Consol. Dist. Memorial day was observed by many at the Pleasant View Cemetery, and that beautiful resting place of the dead was made more beautiful by the flowers and flags, but the hearts of many were made sad by the death of WM. COLLIER, pioneer settler of Caddo county. Pneumonia claimed him as A victim, and a few days after Memorial day his body was laid to rest beside that of his wife and little ones in the Pleasant View Cemetery. The funeral was preached at the Baptist Church in Fort Cobb and was Very largely attended. The sympathy of the community is extended to his sorrowing relatives. ANOTHER PIONEER ASLEEP There was only the sound of weeping From watchers around a bed-- But rest to the weary spirit, Peace to the quiet dead! Another pioneer has passed away. MR. GOLDEN, an "old timer" of the Willow Creek community, passed away last Monday morning at a hospital In Oklahoma City after a lingering illness of several months. We Sympathize with his deeply afflicted wife, who has lost a devoted life companion, who lingers like a broken flower, helpless in her suffering and who attended the funeral in her wheel chair. Also the surviving children who have lost a loving father; while we pray that the Almighty Arm may sustain them and the consolation of the Divine Spirit may be given them. Services were held at the Sickles auditorium Tuesday afternoon. The chancel was banked with floral offerings and the minister of Fort Cobb conducted the service. Burial was in the Sickles Cemetery. Funeral services will be announced later by the Gish Funeral Home. --------------------------------------------------------------------- The Anadarko Tribune Thursday, June 14, 1928 Vol. 27 No. 47 DAVID DURAND HOAG, MASONIC HEAD, DIES Was Resident of Anadarko Some Years Ago; Attained High Rank As Mason DAVID DURAND HOAG, 87, former Anadarko citizen, and at one time grand master of Oklahoma Masons, died Sunday in Oklahoma City. His funeral was in charge of the Scottish Rite at Kansas City Wednesday, according to word received here. Hoag, organized the Enid Royal Arch chapter and commandery. He was made grand lecturer, then elected emeritus grand lecturer. He was a member of Oklahoma Consistory No. 1, Guthrie, and a 33rd degree Mason. He was past grand patron of the Eastern Star of Oklahoma. Hoag, born in Canada, Aug. 25, 1841, was a life member of India Temple Shrine, Oklahoma City and of Nova chapter, Order of Eastern Star. Oklahoma City lodge No. 36, Cyrus chapter No. 7, Alpha countil No. 18, and Oklahoma commandery No. 3 also claimed him as a member. ROY F. LYON DIES EARLY THIS MORNING AT HIS HOME ROY F. LYON, aged 21, son of MR. and MRS. L.B. LYON, who was born and reared in Anadarko, died at the family home, 214 West Georgia, at 12:10 a.m. Wednesday after a lingering illness. Deceased was a graduate of the Anadarko high school with the class of 1926. He was a member of the glee club in 1924, 1925 and 1926. He was also a member of the junior quartet in 1925 and the high school quartet in 1926. After his graduation he worked in the Coombs drug store for some time after which he was associated with his father and brother at the carpenter's trade. He grew up in the Sunday school of the First Methodist church, having united with the church at the Easter service in 1920. Besides his parents he is survived by three brothers, CLIFFORD, FRED And WALTER, and three sisters, MRS. ERMA WILLIAMS, MRS. VILLA HUNT and MISS DOROTHY LYON. Funeral services were conducted by REV. A.H. PONATH And REV. F.L. FARRINGTON at the First Methodist church Thursday, June 14, at 10 a.m. Interment was in the Anadarko Cemetery. Members of the local carpenters' union, of which he was a member, assisted in services at the grave. HOWARD TAUNGKY HOWARD TAKOUNGKY, 22 years old, Anadarko, died at the family home Friday. Funeral services were conducted by FATHER AL at the Catholic Mission Sunday morning at 9 o'clock. Burial was in the Red Stone cemetery. (NOTE: The name was spelled BOTH ways in the newspaper.) Wilbur Bates WILBUR BATES, 19 years old, Anadarko, died at his home Sunday morning from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Funeral services and burial were in Rock Springs cemetery Monday morning at 11 o'clock. LILLIE BELL LeMASTER LILLIE BELL LeMASTER died at the home of her sister, MRS. W.M. OGLE, June 10, 1928, after a lingering illness. Deceased was born Nov. 27, 1878 at Booneville, Mo., and is survived by two sisters and four brothers, THOMAS D. of Klamouth Falls, Oregon; FRANCES COLFAX of Petersburg, Indiana; W.B. of 727 Ninth street, Sacramento, Calif., and REX SHERIDAN of 440 Maple street, Los Angeles, Calif. She had practically been an invalid all her life. The body was shipped to the old home in Indiana for interment. YOUNG, mother of MRS. THEO. PRUETT, died at 7:30 o'clock this (Thursday) morning at the home of her daughter here after a prolonged illness. Funeral arrangements await the arrival of relatives. GILLILAND TO BE BURIED WITH MILITARY HONORS The remains of AMERICUS WES GILLILAND, aged 42, who died at the soldiers' hospital in Norman Tuesday, were returned to Anadarko Wednesday and the body will be laid to rest in the Anadarko cemetery Thursday afternoon with full military honors, members of the American post of the American Legion and other service men in charge. Gilliland had been a resident of Anadarko since March, 1901. He owned a 40-acre tract of land northwest of town where he lived after returning from overseas until ill health forced him to enter the hospital at Norman for treatment about four years ago. He also owned a 40-acre Tract near Harrison, Arkansas. Gilliland was born at Harrison, Boone county, Arkansas, but his mother died while he was an infant. He was taken by his uncle and aunt, MR. And MRS. B.M. LEATHERS, and made his home with them until after they Moved to Oklahoma. His service record shows he enlisted in the army at Anadarko June 25, 1918, and was discharged at Camp Pike, Ark., May 21, 1918. He saw action overseas and was attached to the Machine Gun company of the 114th infantry. His illness was caused from injuries received while overseas. Deceased was well and favorably known to many people in Caddo county Who will be grieved to learn of his death. The body is being held at the Gish Funeral Home and funeral arrangements are awaiting the arrival of A brother who is expected to arrive here Wednesday afternoon. The lad had been working in the field and was waiting for a shower to abate when a bolt of lightning killed him instantly. Fred was 16 years old. OBITUARIES Gaines Sawyer GAINES SAWYER was born in LaMarr county, Texas May 19, 1881, and passed to the Great Beyond June 23, 1928, at this home near Verden, Okla. Funeral services were held at his home Sunday morning at 11 o'clock and interment was in Anadarko cemetery June 24. ERNEST M. ADAMS conducted the services and ROY D. HANSEN, undertaker, was in charge of the funeral. Pallbearers were TED JANSEN, LEE TIPPETT, ORIN HALL, B. TACKETT, CLYDE BUMMELL and JAMES ROBINSON. GAINES SAWYER was united in the holy bonds of matrimony with ALICE RILEY April 15, 1901, at McMillan, Okla., where they lived in the Surrounding neighborhood until they moved near Verden a few years ago. He leaves to mourn his departure his wife, two sons, JESSE and OTTO; One daughter, VERA; two brothers, OSS and BOB, and a host of relatives And friends. Mr. Sawyer was a prosperous farmer and a true friend to everyone who knew him. OGLE, June 10, 1928, after a lingering illness which had covered the greater part of her life. She was born in Cooper county, Mo., Nov. 27, 1878, being at the time of her death 49 years, 6 mos., and 14 days. She was the youngest daughter of MR. and MRS. C.C. LeMASTERS, who were pioneers of Caddo county, having settled on a claim in Jefferson township in 1901. Lillie gave her sister and others who helped care for her the assurance that she was fully prepared to meet her Maker in peace. And she anxiously awaited the sumons to go. She is survived by her father, C.C. LeMASTERS, who is now an inmate of the Union soldiers' home at Oklahoma City; four brothers and two sisters as follows: T.D. LeMASTERS of Klamouth Falls, Oregon; F.C. LeMASTERS of Petersburg, Ind.; R.S. LeMASTERS of Los Angeles, Calif., and W.B. LeMASTERS, her twin brother of Sacramento, Calif.; MRS. ROSA CHURCHWELL of Evansville, Ind., and MRS. MINNIE OGLE of Anadarko. Her Mother preceded her to the Great Beyond seen years ago. FRY was born May 15, 1931 (sic), in the state of Virginia and died June 22, 1928. While he was yet a small boy the family moved from Virginia to Ohio, where he grew to manhood. Here he met and married MISS MARY BERGER. He enlisted in company H, 5th regiment of the Ohio cavalry and was discharged as a sergeant on Oct. 30, 1865, at Charlotte, North Carolina. He moved his family to Indiana and in 1890 moved to Oklahoma Territory. Here he filed and proved up on a claim nine miles northwest of Mulhall. He later moved to the town of Mulhall where his wife died Sept. 20, 1910. To this union were born nine children, namely, CLARA, EMMA, HARVE, HULDA, ELMER, LUCY, JOSEPH, ADDIE and DELIA (Della?). On May 12, 1914, he married MRS. ALICE LOAR, who died in 1925. Since this time he had made his home with his daughter, MRS. DELLA CAMPBELL, at Anadarko, Okla. He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church and the G.A.R. He is survived by two sisters, MRS. MARY HANSEL of Ohio and MRS. LIZZA DAVIS of Indiana, and four children, MRS. EMMA VORE of Blufton, Indiana, MR. HARVE FRY of Mulhall, MRS. HULDIA FELL of Skiatook, MRS. LUCY MORRIS of Bramen and MRS. DELLA CAMPBELL of Anadarko. INDIAN KILLED BY LIGHTNING HAROLD DUPONT, Kiowa Indian about 36 years old, was instantly killed And HORACE POOLAW was knocked down by a bolt of lightning about 6 o'clock Wednesday evening during the severe electrical storm that raged in this section of the state for several hours today. Dupont had just stepped from his home when he was killed. He is married and has a family.
