Caddo Co. OK Newspaper - Anadarko Tribune Submitted By Sandy Miller ========================================================= The Anadarko Tribune Thursday, April 5, 1928 Vol. 27 No. 37 EDWARDS FUNERAL HELD AT CHICKASHA SUNDAY ART EDWARDS, aged 28, died at Anadarko Saturday morning at 9:25 o'clock and the body was returned to Chickasha for funeral services held at the Stiles chapel Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock, REV. R.E. MUSGRAVE, pastor of the First Christian Church officiating. Burial was at Rose Hill Cemetery. Mr. Edwards is survived by his widow, his father, W.L. EDWARDS, and a brother, ROY EDWARDS of Chickasha. Mr. Edwards had been in a critical condition since the latter part of December. After undergoing an operation in an Oklahoma City hospital for a tumorous growth on the brain and removed to his home at Chickasha, he had been remaining at the home of Mrs. Edwards' mother in Anadarko. Occasional rallies of strength offered hope for his recovery from time to time. Mr. Edwards was born in Dewey, Texas, July 29, 1900, and had been living in Chickasha since a small child. THREE MEN MURDERED NEAR CARNEGIE SUN. ABOUT 9 O'CLOCK P.M. Caddo County Officers Are Seeking Man Accused of Slaying. One of the most brutal murders of recent years was reported to County authorities here Monday morning, when word was received that three men had been shot to death on an embankment by the side of a railroad grade about a quarter of a mile west of Carnegie. A fellow by the name of JIM JOHNSON, who with his family, lived close by in a tent, is said to have committed the crime and is being sought by officers of this section. As though by an uncanny quirk of fate each of the slain men received a bullet hole in the left side of the head. Evidence also shows that two of them were killed while they slept. A man by the name of Looney, who, with another witness is being held, escaped with only a knife wound. It is said the killer ran out of cartridges. The reason for the shooting affray remains a mystery. So far as can be learned no motive for the crime exists. SHERIFF GEORGE NIXON and deputies and COUNTY ATTORNEY WM. McFADYEN were called to Carnegie early Monday morning to hold an inquest over the bodies. The dead men were identified as "CURLEY" DALE, a Perry,Okla., mechaic (sic) who came there several days ago to work; NOAH WILLIAMS, a blacksmith, and WALTER SWIGART, a concrete worker. WALTER LOONEY, whose stab wounds were not believed serious, accused Jim Johnson, who was being sought of shooting the three and stabbing him. A search is being conducted for Johnson and others who are believed to have been present at a gathering in the railroad cut. Looney was the only one found who could tell anything of the affair. He said a number of men had been drinking, and that two or three became helplessly intoxicated. Johnson stabbed him as he was caring for the helpless men, he said, and he heard shots as he staggered away. The coroner's inquest opened at the scene of the crime, which was littered with evidence of eating and drinking, such as cracker boxes, tin cans and bottles. After the jury had viewed the scene, an undertaker was permitted to remove the three victims' bodies. Arrest of Johnson was ordered following an inquest at which WALTER LOONEY, stabbed in the brawl, testified Johnson attacked him and then "started shooting." Looney fled, saying he heard a shot as he ran. Search for Johnson was begun by officers immediately. Looney said he and Johnson began in a row over the gun, when Johnson began flashing it in the party. All had been drinking, he said. There had been no quarrel between Johnson and the three slain men, Looney said. Five cartridges were found where the shooting occurred and five wounds were found in the bodies. Dale was shot twice in the legs and once through the head. The others were shot in the head. OBITUARIES THOMAS FELTON GEE, little son of MR. and MRS. J.M. LARISON has spent the past ten days at the home of her daughter, MRS. J.J. BEETS, helping care for the three year old little girl, MINNIE ELIZABETH, but with all the loving care and medical aid she died Sunday night at 2:15 and was laid to rest Monday afternoon at 4 o'clock in the Anadarko cemetery. Funeral services were held at the Home with Farmer & Grimmett in charge. A large number of friends and relatives accompanied the little body to its resting place. In Memory of MINNIE ELIZABETH BEETS who was born April 27, 1925 and died April 2, 1928, aged 2 years, 11 months and 2 days. She was laid to rest in the Anadarko cemetery Monday afternoon at 4 o'clock. We had a little treasure onde, She was our joy and pride, We loved her, ah! perhaps too well, For soon she slept and died. Her little chair is vacant, Her little voice is stilled, A place is vacant in their home That never can be filled. Though torn and bleeding our heart strings, This assurance our Savior has given; Suffer little children to come unto me, For of such is the kingdom of heaven. Up and Down Spring Creek Death of Mrs. H.O. DuBois This community was again plunged into sorrow last Tuesday morning, March 27, upon learning of the passing during the night of one of Spring Creek's best loved women. MRS. H.O. DuBOIS had been in failing health since last May when her youngest son CECIL passed away. Her grief was so great, although at times she tried to be reconciled, yet she brooded until her health gave way. Those of us who knew her best could easily discern the aguish of a broken heart beneath the smile she always had when the pain was not too great. Several weeks ago she was taken to Geary for treatment, but kidney trouble was too deep seated for medical aid to reach. All these months she bore her suffering as best she could, living always in sweet Christian faith, until at one o'clock on Tuesday morning the Great Physician prescribed rest and she closed her eyes to awaken in the bright and beautiful morning of eternity, loved by all who knew her. Funeral services were held at Parker Chapel, conducted by REV. JOHN COX of Gracemont. REV. PANKEY of Tulsa, former pastor at this place and a close friend of the deceased, sang "No Night," a song she requested several months ago be sung at her funeral. Hundreds of friends from far and near came to pay their last respects. The church was altogether too small to hold the crowd. Burial was in Spring Creek cemetery. She leaves to mourn her going her husband, H.O. DuBois, and son Ed, two grandchildren, two sisters and three brothers. To each we extend our deepest sympathy. May the beautiful life she lived be an inspiration to them to ever live true to the ideals she had for them. OBITUARIES Minnie Mae DuBois MINNIE MAE HEDGLIN was born at Phillipsburg, Kansas, July 22, 1883, and departed this life March 27, 1928, at her home eight miles northeast of Gracemont, at the age of 44 years, 8 months and 5 days. She was married to HARRY O. DuBOIS Feb. 18, 1903. To this union were born two boys, ORVEL ED and HARRY CECIL, who preceded her May 20, 1927. Those left to mourn her loss are her husband, Harry DuBois, and son Ed, two sisters and three brothers--MRS. W.L. TRIPLETT of Covington, Okla.; MRS. C.R. COFFIN of Crescent, BEN HEDGLIN of Chandler, VERNER HEDGLIN of Tuttle, and LEWIS HEDGLIN of Anadarko--and a host of friends and relatives. She was converted and joined the M.E. Church when fourteen years of age and lived a true Christian life ever since. Her faith never wavered and she often expressed a desire to go to her Savior. Funeral services were conducted at Packer Chapel Friday at one o'clock by REV. JOHN A. COX of Gracemont. Interment was in Spring Creek cemetery under the direction of Farmer & Grimmett, funeral directors. Death of Katie Conley The death angel entered the home of MR. and MRS. LUTHER CONLEY March 28 and plucked the fairest flower there, KATIE, the only little daughter. So silent was the call we hardly realized her soul had winged its flight with Him to be at home with God. She will be greatly missed for by her sunny disposition and pleasing ways she was an inspiration to all. To the dear father and mother and other relatives our hearts go out in tender sympathy. While we breathe a silent prayer that the loving Father of us all may cause His blessing to rest upon them. Then as the bright rays of the sun break through the dark clouds we take courage again as we remember this life does not end all. In our Father's home are many mansions where there is room for just such bright, beautiful spirits as hers, where free from pain and suffering there is eternal bliss.
