HERLEY D., 22, is the son of Mrs. W.L. Lair of Anadarko. He attended the Stecker School and Southwesern Tech in Weatherford. He entered the service of the regular army with the mobilization of the National Guard and has been stationed in the Panama Canal Zone. ---------------------------------------------- LAMAR, PFC. RILEY, 29, stationed with the marines in Pearl Harbor, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Lamar of Anadarko. He volunteered in December of 1941 and trained in San Diego, Calif. He attended Riverside Indian School and Chilocco Indian School. ---------------------------------------------- LANDERS, PFC. WILLIE T. Ok. 894 AAA AW BN CAC, (01 aug 1908 / 25 mar 1971) Buried in the Albert / Oney cemetery. ---------------------------------------------- LANE, S-SGT. ARGLE Lloyd., 57 TRP. CARR. SQ. AAF, (03 feb 1922 / 28 sep 1952) is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Lane of Fort Cobb and the grandson of J.A. Lane. He entered the service Oct. 19, 1942. He has been stationed at the army air base in Fort Wayne, Ind. Buried in the Eakly cemetery. ---------------------------------------------- LANKFORD, T. SANDY (21 oct 1920 / 24 jul 1989). Buried in Memory Lane cemetery at Anadarko. ---------------------------------------------- LARISON, PFC. MILLARD D., is a graduate of Washita school in 1942. Son of Mr. and Mrs. Millard Larison, Ninnekah, and grandson of Mr. and Mrs. J.M. Larison, Washita, he entered the army air corps Feb. 3, 1943, and has been in Amarillo, for training. ---------------------------------------------- LARSON, S-SGT EMIL W., 25, (16 nov 1919 / 31 oct 1989), is the son of Mr. and Mrs. O.F. Larson of Eakly. He was inducted Nov. 4, 1941 and served in the artillery at Norfolk, Va. and Seattle, Wash., until June 1944, when he was transferred into the 42nd infantry (Rainbow) division; and took his training at Camp Gruber, Okla. He sailed for overseas duty in Nov. 1944. Larson was wounded while serving in the European theatre of war in France. He is married to the former Miss Nora Joe Crowell of Oney and shee and her small son make their home with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Crowell. Buried in the Poage cemetery. ---------------------------------------------- LAW, WILBURN E., PHM 1 U.S. Army, (1911 / 1981), buried in Memory Lane cemetery at Anadarko. ---------------------------------------------- LAWRENCE, CPL. BETTIS and CPL. ROBERTA LAWRENCE, are two of the three members of the R.L. Lawrence family of Anadarko. Bettis Lawrence is now serving as an English instructor for the army prisoner of war camp at Erie Proving Ground, LaCoine, Ohio. He has been in the service for two years, training at Fort Sill and studying an army language course at the University of St. Louis, Mo., for a year. Cpl. Roberta Lawrence is to receive her commission as a second lieutenant in the WACs. She is now in OCS at Brooke General Hospital in Fort Sam Houston, Texas. She entered the WACs before the women's corps became a part of the regular army. She took her basic training in Florida. ---------------------------------------------- LAWRENCE, PFC. JOHNNIE W., PFC. LEWIS H. LAWRENCE and PFC. VIRGIL LAWRENCE, are the sons of W.C. Lawrence of Modesto, Calif., and brothers of Mrs. Jewel Doshier of Gracemont. Johnnie and Lewis received their basic training at Fort Bliss, Tex., and Johnnie was given a medical discharge after serving one year in New Guinea. Virgil took his training at Houston, Tex., and has been stationed in France. All men entered the service in 1940. ---------------------------------------------- LAWRENCE, jr., CAPT. ROBERT LEE, U.S. Army, (20 jul 1918 / 06 jun 1986), of Anadarko was blown from his bed by the opening barrage of German artillary heralding the breakthrough of the Ardennes line in early December. Wounded a few hours later, his entire tirip to the rear area hospital was one of escape after escaping from German paratroopers, armor and bombs. He recovered at McCloskey General Hospital in Temple, Texas. Buried in Memory Lane cemetery at Anadako. ---------------------------------------------- LAWSON, SGT. EVEREST E., son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Lawson of Apache, joined the army in July 1941, and has been serving overseas for 19 months. He is with the tank destroyer division and received his training in Camp Polk, La. Lawson attended school at Stecker and Boone. His wife and baby live at St. Paul, Minn. ---------------------------------------------- LAWTER, JR., LT. CHARLES M., is the son of former Anadarko residents Mr. and Mrs. Charley Lawter Sr. He has been reported missing in action since February 17 in the North African theatre. He was with a communication squadron of the army air corps. He attended and graduated from Anadarko High School. He attended Oklahoma A&M college for two years and entered the armed services with the 45th Division as a sergeant. He transferred to the air corps in August 1941 and was stationed in the observation school at Kelly Field, Texas and with an observation squadron at the army air base at Tullahome, Tenn. ---------------------------------------------- LAYE, PVT. HOLLIS, 18, is the son of Mrs. Ludia Bates of Anadarko. He volunteered into the army Sept. 12, 1942 and has been stationed with a tank division at Fort George Meade, Md. He attended Anadarko schools. ---------------------------------------------- LAYE, SGT. KENNETH C., U.S. Army, Purple Heart, (07 aug 1921 / 12 apr 1993), Anadarko soldier with the 45th Division in Italy, has received the Purple Heart award for injuries received in battle. Laye is the son of Mrs. Ludia Bates of Anadarko and notice of the award was sent by the war department to the soldier's wife, who is making her home in Hobbs, N.M. Laye is serving with headquarters battery of the 45th Division as a technician radio sergeant. He had been a member of the National Guard since 1937, remaining with the army when the units were mobilized in the fall of 1940. He attended Anadarko schools and is married to the former Miss Juanita Canada. Buried in Memory Lane cemetery at Anadako ---------------------------------------------- LEACH, SGT. CLINTON ELMO - 868 bOMB Sq. AAF, Purple Heart, (1 sep 1916 /23 jul 1945) Harlingen Army Air Field, Texas, (special) - More qualified aerial gunners graduated this week from Harlingen Field and in the large class was Clinton E. Leach, son of Mr. and Mrs. R.E. Leach of Hydro. He is one of the men who will handle the deadly machine gun aboard the army's big bombers - a key job as the air forces continue to blast the enemy around the world. At brief exercises he reeived his diploma and silver gunner's wings. Completion of the course and another mechanical course, such as radio operation, automatically entitles him to sergeant's chevron's. Unless retained as an instructor he will be sent immediately to a combat team. Buried in the Sickles cemetery. ---------------------------------------------- LEACH, S-SGT. ROBERT E., 28, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. R.E. Leach of Eakly. He is the brother of Ms. Iris Leach of Anadarko. He graduated from the Eakly High School and enlisted in the U.S. Army Dec. 23, 1941. He has been stationed in Walla Walla, Wash. ---------------------------------------------- LEASE, S1c W.O. 'Bill', USN, is the son of Mrs. Harry Williams of Los Angeles, Calif. He attended Anadarko High School where he was prominent in football and track activities. He enlisted shortly after war was declared and is now stationed in the Pacific War Zone. ---------------------------------------------- LEE, PFC. ELGA, 18, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Armon A. Lee of Eakly. He volunteered for service in the marine corps Aug. 14, 1943, and took his boot trainng at San Diego, Calif. He received advanced training at Oceanside, Calif. He attended school at Oak Dale and graduated from Eakly high school in 1943, where he was active in basketball, softball and baseball. He was engaged in farming before entering the services and has been stationed with the 4th manne division, somewhere in the South Pacific area. ---------------------------------------------- LEE,PFC. FLOYD C., 27, U.S. Army (13 aug 1915 / 25 aug 1992) is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Berry Lee of Anadarko. He volunteered into the army in January of 1941 and is now stationed at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. He attended school at Antondale. Buried in Memory Lane cemetery at Anadarko. ---------------------------------------------- LEE, SPS JOHNY W., United States Army, (02 apr 1915 / 29 nov 1991). Also served in the Korean War. Buried in the Fort Cobb cemetery. ---------------------------------------------- LEE, ORBIN KENARD, United States Army, (18 sep 1907 / 29 jan 1996). Buried in the Fort Cobb cemetery. ---------------------------------------------- LEE, S-SGT. S.T. United States Air Force, 22, (26 nov 1921 / 02 apr 1999) and PFC. RALPH DARWIN LEE, 19, are the nephews of Mrs. O.J. Taylor of Gracemont and the sons of Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Lee of Turlock, Calif. S.T. Lee was inducted into the service Sept. 19, 1942, and was sent from Fort Sill to Portland, Ore., and received further training in the air corps at Hammer Field, Calif. He attended school at Eakly. Ralph Lee was inducted into the U.S. marine corps June 1, 1943, and received his training at San Diego and Mojave, Calif. He attended school at Eakly. S.Sgt. S.T. Lee s buried in the Eakly cemetery. He also served in the Korean War. ---------------------------------------------- LEIGHTON, RICHARD A., motor machinist's mate 3c, U.S.Army and U.S. Navy (06 apr 1919 / 12 dec 1999), is the grandson of Mrs. Maude Meek and the late J.R. Meek of Fort Cobb. He is the brother of Mrs. O.H. Jackson of Verden. He has been in the navy for the past 18 months and received his boot training at Farragut, Idaho. He received special training at Bremerton, Wash., and Teburon, Calif. Leighton wears the pre-Pearl Harbor, American theater of war and Asiatic-Pacific ribbons. Previous to his service with the navy he was stationed with the army on Puerto Rico for 13 months. Following his discharge from the army, he enlisted in the navy and is stationed at the naval hospital in Norman receiving medical treatment. He is a graduate of the Fort Cobb High School and married Ruby Lee Clift. He is buried in the Fort Cobb cemetery. ---------------------------------------------- LEMMON, PFC. ROBERT, 20, and PFC. RICHARD LEMMON, 19, are the sons of Mr. and Mrs. C.B. Lemmon of Fort Cobb. Robert enlisted in the marines, Aug. 20, 1941, and Richard enlisted in the same branch of service, Dec. 11, 1942. Robert attended school at Oak View and Richard attended school at Fort Cobb. They are both somewhere in the South Pacific. Another son, PFC. JOHN W. LEMMON, is also stationed somewhere in the South Pacific. ---------------------------------------------- LEWIS, PVT. ARTTERLY, Ok. 1 U.S. Army, (29 nov 1907 / 15 dec 1970). Buried in Memory Lane cemetery at Anadarko. ---------------------------------------------- LIERLE, PVT. HAROLD E., U.S. Army, (10 jul 1915 / 06 mar 1986). Buried in the Sickles cemetery. ---------------------------------------------- LINDLEY, PFC. DEE L., entered the service Sept. 23, 1942. He has been in North Africa since the first of May. His wife now resides with her parents at Walters. She is the former Juanita Oliver of Lookeba. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. R.B. Lindley of Lookeba and graduated from Lookeba High School in 1939. ---------------------------------------------- LINDSAY, PVT. FELIX, is the son of Mrs. Elsie Lindsay of Anadarko. He is now stationed at Camp Campbell, Ky. He attended school here before entering the armed forces and was employed at Bauman's Grocery. His wife, the former Uneta Bustle, is with him at the present time. ---------------------------------------------- LINGLE, PFC. VOLNIE GENE, United States Army, (25 jul 1926 / 09 dec 1977). Buried in Memory Lane cemetery at Anadarko. ---------------------------------------------- LOCO, RICHARD VERNON, 21, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Loco of Apache. He entered the service of the navy April 1942. He is a Fort Sill-Apache Indian. He was married Dec. 20 to Amelia Brase, who now makes her home with his parents. He has been stationed at Treasure Island, San Francisco, Calif. Before entering the service he worked in a defense airplane plant in Wichita, Kans. ---------------------------------------------- LOGAN, CPL. JAMES W., Ok. Tec. 5 404 Engr. Comba Bn, (18 sep 1918 / 04 dec 1951), is the son of Mrs. Julia Brown. He is 24. He was stationed in North Africa. He attended Gracemont schools. He is buried in the Fort Cobb cemetery. ---------------------------------------------- LOGSDON, PVT. DAVID E., 22, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Logsdon of Mayking, Ky. He has made his home here for the past year and one half. He enlisted in the Army June 1941 and took his basic training at Fort Bragg, N.C. and desert training in California. His wife, the former Lillie Cash and baby are making their home here with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ord Cash. ---------------------------------------------- LOGSTON, FELIX DALE, U.S. Navy, (11 aug 1912 / 21 feb 1990), buried in the Bridgeport cemetery. ---------------------------------------------- LONG, TEC. 5 FRED J., Ok. 260 SIG HV Const. Co., (16 oct 1912 / 31 oct 1955) Buried in the Binger cemetery. ---------------------------------------------- LONG, CPL. HERMAN A., 21, is the son of W.F. Long of Anadarko. He enlisted in the service Feb. 25, 1943, and received his basic training at Fort Knox, Ky. He has been stationed somewhere in the desert in Arizona. Before entering the service he was engaged in farming. He is a nephew of Mr. and Mrs. Johnnie Long of Anadarko. ---------------------------------------------- LONG, PFC. LEONARD H., 24, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Johnie Long, Chickasha, and formerly of Anadarko. He entered the service July 9, 1944 and received his basic training at Fort Sam Houston, Texas and Camp Wheeler, Ga. He is stationed in Europe with the infantry as a machinegunner. His wife and baby daughter make thier home in Westville, Okla. ---------------------------------------------- LONGHORN, CPL. CARL, 23, is the son of Mrs. Polly Longhorn and is stationed at general hospital somewhere in Egypt with the medical corps. He was inducted into the armed forces Feb. 1941, and received his basic training at Camp Barkeley, Texas and Camp Kilmer, N.J. He is a high school graduate and also college graduate of Haskell Institute in Lawrence, Kan. He attended high school here until his junior year and was active in football and track. MELVIN D., U.S. Army, 24, (25 aug 1918 / 20 dec 1991) is the son of Mrs. Polly Longhorn of Anadarko. He graduated from the Anadarko High School in 1936 and attended the Haskell Institute in 1937. For a time he was with the CCC-IO at Fort Cobb. He entered the service of the regular army with the mobilization of the National Guards and is now stationed with the 45th Division. He was a member of the guards for eight years prior to his entrance into the service. Buried in Memory Lane cmetery at Anadarko. ---------------------------------------------- LONGHORN, PFC. ROBERT ADDISON, U.S. Army (1926 / 1985). Buried in the Memory Lane cemetery at Anadarko. ---------------------------------------------- LOONEY, PVT. FLOY J., 26, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. F.J. Looney of Gracemont. He entered service in 1944 and received his training at Camp Fannin, Texas. Looney attended schools at Star and Gracemont. ---------------------------------------------- LORENTZ, SP. 5 ARTHUR S., U.S. Army, (21 ec 1919 / 13 oct 1991). Buried in Memory Lane cemetery at Anadarko. ---------------------------------------------- LOVE, SGT. EARL is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Love of Elgin. He attended school at Fletcher and graduated from the high school there. He enlisted Dec. 4, 1941 from Tulare, Calif., receiving his first training as a bombardier at Las Vegas, Nev. He went across to England sometime last June and was reported by the United Press dispatches to be a gunner on one of the American Flying Fortresses which bombed the railroad yards at Rouen, France on Aug. 18. He is 24 years of age. ---------------------------------------------- LOVE, PVT. MELVIN, 20, is the son of A.C. Love of Sanger, Calif., and the brother of Mrs. Maxine Miller, also of Sanger. He attended the Anadarko schools and was inducted into the U.S. Army Jan. 28, 1943. He has been stationed at a camp in California. ---------------------------------------------- LOWRY, PVT. LEROY, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Lowry of Anadarko. He received his boot training at Paris Island, S.C., and advanced training at Camp LeJeune, N.C. He is now stationed at Camp Pendleton, Calif. He enlisted and reported for duty in the marine reserve in 1945. He attended Anadarko schools. ---------------------------------------------- LOWRY, CM2c VIRGIL, Seabee, a commendation from Vice-Admiral Frank Jack Fletcher, American North Pacific naval commander, has been handed Virgil W. Lowry of Anadarko, who was one of a party of men who performed a rescue mission last Nov 20 - 21 on Unalaska Island. Lowry, who joined the Seabees in Sept. 1942, has been stationed on the Aleutians for nearly a year. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. I.H. Lowry of Anadarko, and his wife is now employed at Douglas Aircraft in Oklahoma City. ---------------------------------------------- LUMPKIN, SGT. BURTICE C., of Fort Cobb, was stationed with the Fifth Pursuit Squadron, Grenier Field, Manchester, N.H. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. H.C. Lumpkin of Fort Cobb. He is married and his wife is now living at Clinton. He is the twin brother of Mrs. Charles Bartovosky of Apache. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in January 1942. He received his honorable discharge from the army air corps at Camp Chafee, Ark., in 1945 after serving for two years and 11 months on foreign soil. He received his basic training at Sheppard Field, Tex., and sailed for overseas in 1942. He fought in the battles for France, Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Sicily, Naples, Rhineland and the Povalley. He holds service ribbons, two silver service stars, two bronze service stars, good conduct medal and the distinguished unit badge. He was with the 15th air force as a cook and truck driver. He attended the Broxton schools. ---------------------------------------------- LYON, CAPT. CLYDE W., is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Lyon of Gracemont. He is now serving with the 82nd infantry, Division Artillery, Camp Claiborne, La. He was transferred to Louisiana recently from a cavalry division at Fort Bliss, Texas. He is married and his wife and three children are now with him. He graduated from Gracemont High School and is a 1930 pharmacy raduate of the University of Oklahoma at Norman and entered the service in January 1941. ----------------------------------------------
