The Anadarko Daily News July 4, 1945 page 2 column 2 TRIBUTE TO BOB HUGHES FROM INFANTRY Already the possessor of the Bronze Star Medal and two Oak Leaf clusters, Lt. Col. Bob Hughes, Apache army officer, has been highly recommended for the Legion of Merit. Commanding the 915th field artillery battalion in various engagements in the European theatre, so efficient was his outfit in support of the 359th infantry that infantry officers are unanimous in their praises for the accuracy of fire from Colonel Hughes' organization. As an example of the confidence in their uncanny accuracy, front line troops never hestitated to call for fire as close as 50 yards. The confidence paid huge dividends in dead Germans and repulsed counterattacks the recommendation stated. According to the records, the 359th had the reputation of never relinquishing any ground once taken and the artillery support was hugely responsible, it stated. Throughout the campaigns from the landing of the 90th division at Normandy, the pursuit across France; the capture of Metz, the Saar river; the elimination of the Bastogne bulge, the battle of the Ardennes and the breaking of the Siegried line and ending with the combat team still in contact in Czechoslovakia on V-E day, the 915th was rated outstanding. The recommendation further stated that disregarding his own safety on many occasions, Colonel Hughes personally visited forward positions with the AT platoon of the 359th infantry. It was before his promotion from major to lieutenant colonel that he was wounded while supervising liaison officers. Several weeks in a hospital failed to dampen his spirit and he was continually on the alert to improve the various units under his command. His military career had its origin at the University of Oklahoma, where he received a degree in pharmacy in 1932. Leaving the university with the rank of second lieutenant in the ROTC he was employed as a druggist for some time, later engaging in stock raising west of Apache. He kept in close contact with military affairs by attending national guard encampments and through correspondence. In 1940 he was made a first lieutenant at Fort Sill and assigned to the 1st field artillery and promoted to captain at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. in 1942. It was at Camp Barkeley, Texas, that was given his major's leaf and assgned to the 915th field artillery of the 90th division. After several months of desert maneuvers near Indio, Calif., this organization went overseas in January, 1944. Lt.
