The number of negroes had not been footed up when we inquired Wednesday at the county clerk's office, but it was thought that it would be under, rather than above, 200. There is reason to believe that there are in this county a few men who would be glad to be back where they were Tuesday morning, June 5. Of this number we take to be two brothers, Harvey Leonard Newton and E.O. Newton, who live about three miles southeast of Carnegie. They arrived here Wednesday night, hunted for the registrar, were told that he had gone home and that it was too late for them to be accommodated before the next day. They each left with County Clerk Cummings, at his request, and filled out a card, such as they would have been required to present if they had registered. One of them was single; the other had a wife and three children. Harvey entered at the bottom of the card: "Do not like to fight for any country." E.O. on the same part of his card wrote: "Do not believe in fighting for any state." (The Anadarko Tribune, 07 june 1917)
