John was born in Muskogee, Indian Territory, 12-5-1858.
He was the son of Richard Timberlake and Catherine Cheek. He married Laura Bell Box and they had three children, Florence, John (infant) and Ruth. Richard traveled the Trail of Tears to Oklahoma. Some children in the family died along the way. John was 1/2 Cherokee, both of his parents being 1/2 and he was a three greats grandson of Ostenaco, famous war Chief of the Cherokees. He was a delegate of the Five Civilized Tribes at Woodrow Wilson's inauguration.
