History of Pine Spur Cemetery:
by Brenda S. Watkins Franklin

My dad's cousin, Whick, told me that while the railroad was being built, a hobo was killed, and was buried on the land...not long after that several people that died while working on the railroad, or living around the area started to get buried there. He, Whick, purchased the land from the county for back taxes, and set aside this one acre for a community cemetery.
Pine Spur was a railroad spur that went into the Dunbar area. Both of my grandparents grew up in that area, that is why most of the people that are buried there are kin to me one way or the other. Also the families married each other, it wasn't unusual for a brother and a sister to marry people from the same household.
Hairrells married some of the Howzes, Watkins married some of the Jacksons.
Cocke married some of the Taylors. And so on. Whick said they didn't go far to pine for a woman, because it wasn't easy to get there. Or the horseback ride wouldn't had been to pleasant going across the river and up the mountains. I think he had a point.
