This cemetery contains the remains of the Honorable Joseph Absalom Scales. Joseph obrained his education in the primary schools of the Cherokee Nation then attended Ozark Institute near Fayetteville, Arkansas and later the Cherokee Male Seminary at Tahlequah for two years. In 1856 at the age of 24, he became sheriff of the Canadian District. In 1858 he was elected by the joint vote of the council to the office of prosecuting attorney. In 1861 he enlisted in the Second Cherokee Regiment for service in the Confederate Army and for a year served in the Quartermaster's Department. Mr. Scales was promoted to the position of Adjutant General under General Stand Watie with which rank he served until the close of the war. He filled every office within the Cherokee Nation with the exception of Chief of Council. Mr. Scales was married first to Rose Tally, a Cherokee. She died in 1862. He was married secondly to Amanda Fowler, widow of Frank Fowler. Information used here with the generous permission of Gary Lester, Braggs.
