Ft. Gibson National Cemetery

List of Burials on Interment.net

Fort Gibson was selected as a National Cemetery site shortly after the Civil War. The original dimensions of the cemetery were 450 feet square. Graves were relocated from battle and camp sites state wide. Places such as Honey Springs, Park Hill, and Hildebrands Mill to name a few. Of the 2100 plus bodies relocated from these sites 1900 were unidentified. This number of unidentified was considered "average" for graves moved to National Cemeteries.

The first superintendent of the Ft. Gibson National Cemetery was Mr. William Thomas. He served in this position from 1870 to 1880.

Ft. Gibson National Cemetery contains the remains of many prominent veterans and their spouses as well as frontier pioneers. Captain Billy Bowlegs, famous Seminole Indian and Civil War Veteran rests here. Sam Houston's wife makes Ft. Gibson National Cemetery her final resting place as well. Information provided by Gary Lester, Braggs.
