ATWOOD – BEARDEN INFORMATION
by George M. Atwood
GEORGE WASHINGTON ATWOOD — Born 1st March 1865 in Cherokee Co., Texas. He was the son of Isaac Y.B. and his wife Anne (BOTTOMS) ATWOOD.
On the U.S. Census for Van Zandt Co., Texas for 1870, George W. ATWOOD is shown living with his grandfather Zachariah (Zach) BOTTOMS. They lived in that county until the mid‑1870s, moving then to the town of Dexter in Cook County, Texas. They only lived there a short time, moving then into Indian Territory to the area of Pauls Valley, White Bead Hill, and Paoli in Garvin Co., I.T.
George Washington ATWOOD first marries Francis Isabel (also known by Fanny Bell/e) (EDDY). (I have heard that she was married before to a man named ………(?) FREDERICKS,
but have been unable to find any information on this marriage.)
George W. and Francis Isabel (Fanny Bell/e) ATWOOD lived in that White Bead Hill area, and my father George William Alexander ATWOOD was born there on 26th of August 1888. They moved before the 1890 U.S. Census, and they are shown on that census as being in the town of Purcell, McClain Co., I.T.
Mary Bell ATWOOD — the second child of George W. and Francis I. ATWOOD — was born in 1892, I.T.; as to where at that time is unknown. In late 1892 George W. and Francis ATWOOD took the family and went to Oskaloosa, Mahaska Co., Iowa to see Francis’s father, Leander EDDY. George and Francis ATWOOD stayed there until 1895.
While George and Francis ATWOOD were still in Oskaloosa, Iowa, their third child Rose Bell/e was born in 1895. In late 1895 George and Francis ATWOOD returned to the Pauls Valley, I.T. area, as they had family there — the BOTTOMS, SEGROVES, KIRKLANDS, as well as many others.
Francis Isabel (Fanny Bell/e) (EDDY — FREDERICKS) ATWOOD passed away at or near White Bead Hill and Paoli. She is buried somewhere in that area.
George W. ATWOOD was left with three small children, and Elizabeth (Betty) and Thomas SEGROVES took the children to care for them while George W. ATWOOD worked.
Children by first marriage:
1. George William Alexander ATWOOD
2. Marry Bell/e ATWOOD — b. 1892 place unknown
3. Rose Bell/e ATWOOD — b. 1895 Oskaloosa, Mahaska Co., Iowa.
On 24th May 1900, George Washington ATWOOD married for the
second time to “Miley Ann BEARDEN.”
Miley had been married
before to “Edgar TOMBERLIN” and was divorced. They lived in
several places—Willis, Pauls Valley, Sulphur, also near Dougherty—before moving
to the Fort Worth, Texas area where they lived out the rest of their life.
Miley Ann (BEARDEN) ATWOOD was the daughter of Wiley W. BEARDEN and his wife Amarita (ADAMS) BEARDEN.
George Washington and Miley Anne (BEARDEN) ATWOOD had the following children:
George Washington and Francis Isabel (Fanny Bell.e) ATWOOD were my
Grandparents.
My father was George William Alexander ATWOOD,
my mother was Lucy Mae (SARTAIN) ATWOOD.
My mother died
thirty minutes after I was born in 1924.
This pretty well brings this line up to present times. I can add more if you would like.
