Flier Missing Over Germany
Sgt. Thomas J. (Jack) Glennan, 23, an aerial engineer and gunner on an American
bomber has been missing in action over Germany since Feb. ll, his parents,
Mr. and Mrs. Tom GLENNAN, of near Cameron College, announced today.
This was the day that American Flying Fortresses pounded Frankfurt, southwest
German industrial and transport center. On the same day, Liberators pounded
northern France.
NO DETAILS GIVEN:
The message from the Adjutant General advising that Sgt. GLENNAN was missing,
gave no details. It merely stated: "The Secretary of War desires me to express
his deepest regret that your son, Sgt. Thomas J. GLENNAN has been reported
missing in action since Feb. ll over Germany. If further details or other
information are received you will be promptly notified."
The telegram was received late yesterday afternoon, only a few days after
the parents received their latest letter from their son, who was based in
England. His last letter was dated Feb. 7, four days before the fateful mission.
OVERSEAS SINCE MAY:
Sgt. GLENNAN has been overseas since last May, but has not been permitted
to discuss his work or missions. "We don't know how many missions he has
made," his mother said. A younger brother, Herrell, 19, is somewhere in the
South Pacific as a pharmacist's mate, second class, with a Marine Air Wing.
Sgt GLENNAN was reared here, finishing high school at St. Mary's Academy
and St. Gregory's College at Shawnee. He was employed by J. W. BATESON
Construction Co. at Fort Sill, and Waco and Paris, Texas for about a year
prior to his enlistment. He entered the Air Corps in September, 1942, and
was trained at Foster Field, Texas, joining his group at Pueblo, Colorado.
Other members of the family are a brother, Joe, 12, and a sister, Anna Marie,
10, at the home address.

Sgt. Glennan Here To Visit Parents
S-Sgt. Jack GLENNAN surprised his family Friday when he returned home
unexpectedly for a 21-day furlough, decorated with the Purple Heart and the
Air Medal, after 11 months overseas.
Sgt. GLENNAN left England last Sunday by plane, and stopped at Jefferson
Barracks, Missouri for reclassification on his way home. He told his parents,
Mr. and Mrs. Tom GLENNAN, Cameron College, that he "feels grand", despite
his wound by a 20-mm shell for which he was awarded the Purple Heart. He
also was awarded the Air Medal before he left England, for meritorious
achievement while participating in aerial flight.
"I'm damned glad to be back," he said at Jefferson Barracks. "I hope to catch
up on my eating, especially milk, on my furlough. I believe I'll buy a cow
- if I can find someone to get up in the mornings to milk her."
A waist gunner aboard a Flying Fortress which was based in England, he was
forced to "take to the chute" over enemy territory in February, and returned
by unrevealed methods to his base two months later. While he may not reveal
the number of missions he undertook, nor the cities he helped blast, Sgt.
GLENNAN admitted that the raid on which he was wounded was "not my first".
He is a graduate of St. Mary's High School and of St. Gregory's College at
Shawnee. He has been in the Army Air Corps since September, 1942.
Glennan Is Back At Bomber Base
The full story of Jack GLENNAN's dramatic absence from a bomber base in England
for 2 months and 11 days probably won't be known until the end of the war,
or until the Army Air Corps staff sergeant has returned home, his mother,
Mrs. Tom GLENNAN, of Lawton believed today.
She received a letter today from her son, dated April 22, the first he has
written since returning to duty and it gave little information as to his
experience. He reported that he was back at his own base and added: "It was
really one grand feeling to walk through the door of the hut and see the
boys again." As soon as he soaks up some sunshine, he won't be any worse
for the wear and tear, he observed.
On Feb. 29, his parents were advised that their son, an aerial engineer and
gunner on an American Flying Fortress, was missing in action. On April 2,
the War Department advised the parents that Jack had returned to duty. Six
days later, the parents received a letter from Jack, dated March 28, in which
he revealed that he was in a hospital somewhere recuperating from wounds.
"All we know is that we are mighty happy," Mrs. GLENNAN said. Their son's
full name is Thomas J. GLENNAN. The grade of staff sergeant represents a
promotion from sergeant, heretofore his rank. He has been in the Army Air
Corps since September, 1942, and went overseas a year ago.

18-Man Team Probing Glennan Murder
by Mick TAYLOR
Some 18 local law enforcement officials have been assigned full-time to the
investigation of the weekend murder of 81-year old Florence GLENNAN
at her home seven miles west of Lawton. Claud BRANSCUM, Comanche County Sheriff
deputy, said the entire sheriff's department is working to solve the murder,
with assistance from the Lawton Police Department. "Mostly, we're just
questioning people", BRANSCUM said of the investigation effort. "So far we're
no further along than we were yesterday." The deputy said the probe is awaiting
the return of fingerprints gathered Sunday at Mrs. GLENNAN's home and forwarded
to Oklahoma City for lab analysis. The prints were expected to be returned
today, after which they would be compared to the victim's prints. A number
of fingerprints were found in the woman's bedroom and living room. Officers
were questioning people today who may have seen the murderer's auto, but
BRANSCUM reported no new leads.
The woman was found about 1 p.m. Sunday just inside the home's front door
by two passing motorists who had experienced car trouble. A blood-smeared
hoe handle and a 20-pound log are believed to have been the murder weapons,
officials said.
Funeral for Mrs. GLENNAN will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in the Lawton Ritter
Dalton Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Ray WOOD, pastor of the First Baptist
Church of Apache, officiating. Burial will be in Cache Cemetery. Mrs. GLENNAN

Fingerprints Checked In Beating Death Here
Fingerprints taken at the home of an 81-year old woman found murdered Sunday
afternoon west of here were being checked in Oklahoma City today as authorities
hunted for suspects.
Mrs. Florence GLENNAN, who lived alone seven miles west of Lawton
on the old U.S. 62 Highway, was found beaten to death shortly after 1 p.m.
Sunday by two Cordell brothers who notified authorities. Comanche County
Sheriff Paul ELKINS said prints taken at the scene will be compared with
those of Mrs. GLENNAN, whose body was taken to Oklahoma City for an autopsy.
John and Robert STEWART, Cordell, reported finding the body after going to
Mrs. GLENNAN's house for water when their car overheated, deputies were told.
Deputies found an 18-inch piece of hoe handle and a 20 lb. log plank, both
with blood and hair on them, that were apparently the murder weapons.
Mrs. GLENNAN was evidently struck as she entered her house. The body was
found inside the fron door. She was last seen alive about 7 p.m. Saturday,
according to ELKINS. A neighbor, who was not identified, saw her getting
out of her car. She nodded and spoke to him, he told deputies. He did not
see another vehicle at the house.
ELKINS said the killer or killers were apparently in the house and may have
been in the process of burglarizing it, when Mrs. GLENNAN came home and surprised
them. She was a saleswoman for a cosmetics firm and had made two calls in
Lawton prior to 7 p.m. ELKINS said. Authorities first thought the murder
occurred about 5:30 p.m. Saturday, because her wrist watch had stopped at
5:29 p.m. Mrs. GLENNAN's purse has not been found. ELKINS said it hadn't
been determined how much money she was carrying.
Her broken dentures were found near the body, and a box of Kentucky Fried
Chicken was inside the door, Deputy Larry LAFRANCE reported. A door on the
north end of the house had been kicked in by her assailants, apparently to
gain entry to the house while she was gone. The woman's house is three-fourths
of a mile west of the Peppermint Club on the north side of the highway.
The bedroom of the house had been ransacked, according to deputies. ELKINS
asked county residents who may have seen vehicles of any description in the
area Saturday evening and Sunday to contact the sheriff's office.
Services for Mrs. GLENNAN are pending with Lawton Ritter Dalton Funeral Home.
She was born Oct. 21, 1891 in Kansas.
