3 Die In Fire Near Boone / Mrs. Robert Jump and Two Children Are Victims
of Blaze; Five Others Injured
Three members of the Robert Jump family are dead as a result of a fire which
destroyed their home 2 3/4 miles north of Boone at about 7 a.m. Friday.
The dead are:
Jerry Don Jump, 3 year old son, who perished in the fire.
Luther Ray Jump, 12, who died in the Anadarko hospital of burns at 11:30
a.m. Friday.
Mrs. Robert Jump, 29, the mother, who died in the same hospital at 3:30 p.m.
Friday.
Robert Jump, 32, the husband and father, is in a critical condition from
burns in the Anadarko hospital. His 18 month old son, Eddie, also is in the
hospital, but his condition is not regarded as critical.
The Jumps' other three, who were less seriously burned, went to Ft. Cobb
Sunday to live with their grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Lisie Jump. They are
Wayne, 10, Linda, 7, and Dejon, 5.
The Jumps' three room home was destroyed when Luther Ray, the 12 year old
son, attempted to start a fire in the wood stove with kerosene. All the family
of eight escaped from the house except the 3 year old son. Mrs. Jump was
fatally burned when she attempted to enter the house to rescue the boy.
Despite critical burns on his face, hand and arms, Mr. Jump loaded his wife
and five surviving children in his car and took them to the Anadarko hospital,
a distance of 26 miles.
He stopped momentarily at the home of Mr. and Mrs. W.L. VICKREY, nearby,
sounding the car's horn, but drove on before the Vickreys understood what
he wanted.
The scene of the fire is on the farm owned by Mrs. Neta K. MUSICK of Kansas
City, Mo.
Hubert WIGGINS has the farm rented, but the house was vacant until he gave
the Jump family permission to occupy it rent-free.
Mr. Jump has been employed by W.L. Vickrey as a farm hand and as a carpenter's
helper.
Funeral services for Mrs. Jump and sons Luther Ray and Jerry Don were held
at the Bellview Baptist chuch at Boone at 2 p.m. Sunday with Rev. Jack Stuart,
the pastor, officiating. Burial followed in Fairview cemetery here under
direction of the Crews Funeral Home.
Bearers for Mrs. Jump were Elmer Jared, Vic Christensen, Ben McMahan, Jack
Jones, Evert Cook, Hubert Wiggins, A.B. Sims and A.R. Beall; for Luther Ray
they were Jmmie Beall, Stanley Vickrey, A.J. Mahler, Bobby Anderson, Bobby
Muse and Junior Jackson; and for Jerry Don they were Vernice Miller and Clifford
Allen.
Mrs. Jump, the former Gertrude Lndsey, was born at Tonkawa March 16, 1921.
She leaves her husband, two daughters, Linda and Dejon; two sons, Wayne and
Eddie; two sisters, Mrs. Viola Tucker of Duncan and Mrs. Gladys Metcalf of
Wewoka; and two half-brothers, Earl Beck of Orange, Ca., and Marshall Beck
of Crowell, Tex.
