Betty Jo Bynum, 74, of Manteca died Sunday.
Mrs. Bynum was a native of Oklahoma. She lived in Manteca 60 years. She belonged
to the American Business Women's Association. She was a member of Oakdale
Community Church.
She is survived by her husband, Cleo Bynum; children, Richard Bynum of Georgia
and Michael Bynum of Manteca; and four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be Thursday at P.L. Fry & Son Chapel. Burial will be at
San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery, Santa Nella.

Alta L. Inman, 93, of Modesto died Monday at Memorial Medical Center.
Mrs. Inman was a native of Oklahoma. She lived in Modesto 58 years.
She is survived by her children, James Edmonds, Jerry Edmonds and Larry Edmonds,
all of Modesto, and Leroy Edmonds of Oklahoma; and 10 grandchildren and several
great-grandchildren.

Anna Irene Lewis, 74, of Oakdale died Friday.
Mrs. Lewis was a native of Newby, Okla. She lived in Oakdale 55 years.
She was a member of the Church of Christ.
She is survived her children, John Lewis and Fred M. Lewis, both of Oakdale;
brothers, Albert Willey of Stockton and Elmer Willey of Oklahoma; sisters,
Neva Williams of Oakdale, and Josephine Daniels and Viola Becker, both of
Modesto; and five grandchildren.

Mary M. Massey, 78, of Newman died Sunday at her home.
Mrs. Massey was a native of Gore, Okla. She lived in Newman 63 years.
She was a member of St. James Lutheran Church, as well as the Lutheran Women's
Group.
She is survived by her children, Joseph Massey of Modesto, John Massey of
Gustine, Jeanie Eighmy of Merced and Judith Tolson of Woodacre; brother,
Larry Holland of Arizona; sisters, Virginia Chesley of Fair Oaks and Lorean
Padgett of Milpitas; and 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Roy Louis McIntosh, 87, of Ceres died Friday at his home.
Mr. McIntosh was a native of Stonewall, Okla. He lived in Ceres 69
years. He was a member of the Pentecostal Church of God. He was an Army veteran
of World War II.
He is survived by his wife, Mellie M. McIntosh; daughter, Juanita Matthew
of Hughson; brother, John McIntosh of Modesto; sister, Lea Ellen Jones of
Hilmar; and three grandchildren and six great- grandchildren.
A funeral will be Thursday at Lakewood Funeral Home, Hughson. Burial will
follow at Lakewood Memorial Park, Hughson.

Charles W. Rodgers, 63, of Lathrop died Saturday at his home.
Mr. Rodgers was a native of Ripley, Okla. He lived in Lathrop two
weeks.He retired in 1982 after a career in the Air Force; he was a veteran
of the Korean and Vietnam wars.
He is survived by his wife, Brenda Rodgers; children, Jean Rodgers of Lathrop,
Allen Rodgers of Clearfield, Utah, Sandra Brookman of Watsonville and Steven
Rodgers of Layton, Utah; sister, Virginia Mello of Capitola; and 10
grandchildren.

and six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Lillian Juanita Thompson, 86, of Modesto died Sunday.
Mrs. Thompson was a native of Oklahoma. She returned to Modesto three months
ago and previously lived in Livermore more than 40 years and Modesto 10 years.
She opened her home to missionaries for 20 years.
She is survived by her children, Donald Rader of Modesto, David Rader of
Livermore, Dorothy Bassage of Modesto and Diane Meuller of Tennessee; sister,
Nina Mayberry of Woodward, Okla.; and 19 grandchildren and 15
great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be today at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints,
2nd Ward, Livermore. Burial will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery, Livermore.

Cletus Mae McGrew, 78, of Chowchilla died Tuesday.
Mrs. McGrew was a native of Sallisaw, Okla. She lived in Chowchilla
50 years. In 1962, she and her husband began pastoring at the Pentecostal
Church of God in Chowchilla, and later pastored at churches in Ceres,
Farmersville, Armona and Kelseyville. They lived in Ceres from 1971 to 1977,
when they pastored at Victory Tabernacle Church.
She is survived by her children, Frank McGrew of Visalia, Ima Hurt of Lindsay,
and Barbara Little and Janice Crockett, both of Chowchilla; brother, Hallen
Breashears of Chowchilla; and 21 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren and
one great-great-grandchild.
A funeral will be Saturday at Worden Funeral Chapel. Burial will be at Chowchilla
District Cemetery.

Robert Gene Sadler, 68, of San Juan Baptista died Monday at Hollister.
Mr. Sadler was a native of Oklahoma City. He lived in Los Banos from
1940 to 1978. In more recent years he lived in San Juan Batista, where he
was an apricot rancher.
He is survived by his daughter, Kristi Sadler of San Juan Batista; brothers,
Red Sadler of Los Banos, LeRoy Sadler of Weldon and Danny Sadler of Rancho
Cucamonga; and sisters, Pauline Pierce of Lake Isabella and Mary Ann Wood
of Los Banos.

Juanita Speights Mathis, 82, of Atlanta died Monday in Atlanta.
Mrs. Mathis was a native of Red Oak, Okla. She lived in Modesto for
62 years before moving to Atlanta in 1998. She was a homemaker. She is survived
by her daughters, Kay Mathis of Ashburn, Va., and Fran Barnett of Atlanta;
two sisters; a brother; and four grandchildren and three great- grandchildren.

Charles Ray Ferguson, 57, of Angels Camp died Friday at Modesto.

Gene R. Runnels, 66, of Modesto died Saturday at Memorial Medical Center.
Mr. Runnels was a native of Olustee, Okla. He lived in Stanislaus
County 56 years. He was a firefighter for the city of Modesto for 28 years;
he belonged to the California Firefighters Association. He was a member of
the Central California Art League and the Death Valley 49ers Art League.
And he belonged to the Old Valley Gold Music Trio. He was a volunteer for
Townsend Opera Players. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter-day Saints, 6th Ward. He was an Air Force veteran.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Runnels; children, Robert Runnels of
Modesto and Cecilie Hobart of Modesto; sisters, Lorene Allsop of Modesto,
Lawana "Susie" Robertson of Manteca; and eight grandchildren.

Jimmie Brooks Rainey, 58, of Winton died Monday at the Veterans Affairs Hospital,
Palo Alto.
Mr. Rainey was a native of Ryan, Okla. He lived in Winton 29 years.
He had retired after a 14 1/2-year career in the Air Force; he attained the
rank of technical sergeant. He belonged to Disabled American Veterans, Atwater,
and AMVETS. He was a member of the Merced Genealogy Association and the
Sportsmen's Club, Turlock. He was a member of the Church of Christ, Livingston.
He is survived by his wife, Rosemary Rainey; children, James Rainey of Lakewood,
Wash., and Cindy Holly of Ansonia, Conn.; brothers, Jerry Rainey of Anaheim
Hills, Richard Rainey of Denver, David Rainey of Renton, Wash., and Cleve

She also had been employed as a dietitian at Community Hospital and Elness Convalescent Hospital. She was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, Community Service Center and TOPS.
She is survived by her caregiver and granddaughter, Bambi Hurd of Turlock; and another grandchild and four great-grandchildren.

had retired after a 40-year career as an oil driller.

1961. She was a cannery worker for Tri Valley Growers. She belonged the Senior
Citizens Club. She was a member of the Pentecostal Church.
She is survived by her son, Willard Joseph Shafer of Temple, Texas; sisters,
Lillian Smith and Esther Moore, both of Hughson, and Virginia Harris of Modesto;
and four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

was a hatchery worker for Foster Farms; she worked at the Dry Creek Hatchery,
Oakdale, for 17 years.

Mr. Sisco was a native of Oklahoma. He lived in Modesto two years. He had
retired after a career as a custodian for the Evergreen School District,
San Jose. He was a farmer in Oklahoma before moving to California in
1951.
He is survived by his children, Irma Di Bona of Modesto, Ronald Sisco of
Dorrington and Carl Sisco of Morgan Hill; brother, Lee Sisco of Citrus Heights;

was a 35-year employee of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Livermore;
he worked in the laser department. He was a member of Manteca Seventh-day
Adventist Church; he was an elder and treasurer.
He is survived by his wife, Iris Cathey of Manteca; children, Jennifer Rojas
of Oklahoma and Joe M. Cathey of Manteca; mother, Beth Cathey of Manteca;
and three grandchildren.

Roland Leroy Haver, 82, of Modesto died Friday at Doctors Medical
Center.
Mr. Haver was a native of Logan County, Okla. He lived in Modesto 35 years
and previously lived in Manteca and Tracy. He was an engineer for Southern
Pacific railroad. He was a member of Prescott Evangelical Free Church.
He is survived by his wife, Amy Agnes Haver of Modesto, children, Loretta
Malaki of Seattle, Robert Haver of Escalon and Anita St. Jean of Martinez;
and seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Carrie Eichman, 89, of Hanford died Thursday at Community Hospital.
Mrs. Eichman was a native of Shattuck, Okla. She lived in Hanford one year
and previously in Modesto 10 years. She was a licensed vocational nurse at
several rest homes. She was a Seventh-day Adventist.
She is survived by her children, Bob Mayberry of Upper Lake, Gerri Scott
and Bill Eichman, both of Hanford, Jean Eddings of Modesto, Jack Eichman
of Ventura, Tom Eichman of Bakersfield and Kay Kaebeary of Fresno; sister,
Alice Schultz of Shattuck, Okla.; and 20 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren
and six great-great-grandchild- ren.

Nina V. Ramsey

Nina Vee Ramsey, 88, of Sonora died Thursday at Sonora Community
Hospital.
Mrs. Ramsey was a native of Addington, Okla. She was a teacher at the Lodi
Academy for 26 years and served as dean of girls during her first tenure.
She was a lifelong member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. She volunteered
in the women's Auxiliary of the long-term care unit at Sonora Community
Hospital.
She is survived by her daughters, Carol Van Arsdale of Dodge Center, Minn.,
and Ruth Caldwell of Sonora; and four grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Burial

Robert James Miller, 88, of Turlock died Friday at Lodi Memorial West Hospital,
Lodi.
Mr. Miller was a native of Oklahoma City. He lived in Turlock 17 years. He
was a painter for Shell Oil Co. for 25 years. He was a member of the Turlock
Senior Citizens and Turlock Grace Tabernacle. He worked in the shipyards
during World War II.
He is survived by his children, Robert A. Miller of Tustin and Barbara Shaw
of Turlock; sister, Juanella Rush of Houston, Texas; and seven grandchildren
and 10 great-grandchildren.

Harry E. "Gene" Roberts, 67, of Bradford, Texas died Thursday at East Texas
Medical Center in Athens, Texas.
Mr. Roberts was a native of Mc Loud, Okla. He lived in Bradford 29 years
and had lived in the Modesto area from 1932 to 1949. He retired from the
Army with numerous military awards after serving 22 years with assignments
in Korea and Vietnam. He was a truck driver and city carrier in Palestine
for the U.S. Postal Service. He was of the Baptist faith.
He is survived by his wife, Evalyn Wilbanks Roberts of Bradford; children,
Donald Roberts of Athens, Texas, and Jackie Willingham, Harriet Blailock
and Virginia Clary, all of Bradford, Texas; brothers, Buster Roberts of
Waterford, Wayne Roberts of Marysville and Frank Roberts of Huntsville, Ala.;
sisters, Wilma Bryan and Helen Carlsen, both of Waterford and Margie Owens
of Oakdale; and four grandchildren.

Mrs. Starkey was a native of Oklahoma. She lived in Stanislaus County 60
years. She was a lab technician for Campbell Soup Co. for 29 years.
She is survived by her son, Edward L. Starkey of Oakdale; brothers, Charlie
Thomas of Turlock and George W. Thomas of Modesto; sisters, Pearl Bledsoe
of Modesto and Evelyn Leourx of Chico; and five grandchildren and six

Sylvan school leader Coleman F. Brown dies at 90

Coleman F. Brown, a teacher and administrator in north Modesto's Sylvan Union School District for 20 years, died Saturday at English Oaks Convalescent Hospital in Modesto. He was 90.
Mr. Brown was born Oct. 17, 1909, in Cogar, Okla. He began teaching at age 18 in Oklahoma.
By 1945, he was in Stanislaus County, teaching at Hickman Elementary School.
In 1948, he became principal and eighth-grade teacher at the Sylvan district's old Cole School. He retired as Sylvan Union superintendent in 1968.
The district honored his contributions by naming a school after him.
James Brown, Mr. Brown's grandson, recalls hearing about his grandfather's early days in the valley.
"He would talk about when teaching in the school district, it was in one schoolroom in the farmland," James Brown said.
After he retired, Mr. Brown enjoyed traveling and making gemstone clocks with his wife, Hazyle Jo Brown, now deceased.
The couple belonged to the Mother Lode Gem and Mineral Society. Mr. Brown wrote stories for the magazine, Gems and Minerals, about clockmaking and other gem creations.
They had one son, Steve Brown, who died more than 12 years ago.
Mr. Brown lived his last two years at English Oaks, where he spent much of his time reading, his grandson said.
"He loved to read. He loved the newspaper," James Brown said.
Throughout the years, Mr. Brown belonged to the California Teachers Association and the Stanislaus Elementary Administrators Association. He was a member of Stanislaus Masonic Lodge 206.
Survivors include three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Lakewood Funeral Home in Hughson. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Marion A. Tyler

Marion Albert Tyler, 83, of Manteca died Friday at Sunbridge Care and
Rehabilitation Center.
Mr. Tyler was a native of Vian, Okla. He lived in Manteca one year and previously
lived in Ceres 39 years. He had retired after a 30-year career as a welder;
he worked for Banquet Foods, Turlock. He was a member and a past deputy grand
master of the Odd Fellows Lodge, Modesto.
He is survived by his children, Julia Broughton of Calipatria, Clark Tyler
of Linn, Mo., and Gary Tyler of Manteca; sisters, Elsie Morris of Turlock
and Bertie McCormick of Oregon; and 12 grandchildren and five
great-grandchildren.

He belonged to the American Society of Civil Engineers and he was a fellow of the American Concrete Institute. He was a member of the Ceres Twisters square dance club.

Mrs. Towry was a native of Blocker, Okla. She lived in Modesto 59 years. She was a cannery worker for Del Monte Foods for 30 years; she belonged to Teamsters union Local 748. She was a volunteer for The Salvation Army.
She is survived by her children, Patsy Lozano of Ceres, Beverly Silliman of Fairfield and Clara Noble of Desert Hot Springs; and 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Hughes was a native of Oklahoma City. He lived in Modesto most of his life. He was a pressman for The Modesto Bee for 24 years and later worked for the Stockton Record for 25 years. He was an Army veteran and served with Company H, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division. He landed in Normandy on D-Day, was later wounded in Holland and received a Purple Heart.
He is survived by his wife, Millie Hughes of Alamogordo, N.M.; daughters, Terry Bukowski of Alamogordo and Jill La Vine of Salem, Ore.; brother, Roy Hughes of Oceanside; sister, Dorothy Hembury of Mount Vernon, Wash.; and four grandchildren.

She was a member of Stepping Pards Square Dancers, Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary Post 5059, Turlock Senior Citizens, All Seasons Travel-Trailer Club and Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. She was a volunteer at Emanuel Medical Center.
She is survived by her son, Ray Donaldson of Turlock; daughter, Lynda Steadman of Turlock; and seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Previously he worked for Union Carbide in the agrichemical field. He was a Navy veteran, serving from 1952 to 1955; he belonged to Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.
He is survived by his wife, Janet Carter of Arizona; children, Mark Carter of Arizona, Jennece Bunyard of Alaska, Kimberly Cooney of Lake Tahoe and Debbie Vickers of Tennessee; brothers, Joe Carter of Dos Palos and Terry Carter, Everett Carter and Gene Carter, all of Los Banos; sisters, Gloria Berge and Florence Franco, both of Madera, Cortez Mezza and Deborah Carter, both of Los Banos, Theresa Canady of Oakland and Katy Johnson of Mariposa; and 15 grandchildren.
