Dr. Gary Johnson, 55, a prominent Checotah Veterinarian died unexpectedly Thursday, September 11, 2008. He was born on Wednesday, December 17, 1952 on a small ranch in Wheatland, Wyoming to Pete and Mildred Cobb Johnson. Gary grew up in Wheatland where he received his education, graduating from Wheatland High School. After graduation, he attended the University of Wyoming, in Laramie where he received his B.S. in Animal Science. Dr. Johnson received his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Kansas State University in 1979. While in Kansas, he met, fell in love and later married Gayle Davis on Saturday, August 12, 1978 in Jetmore, Kansas. After graduation, they moved to Checotah where Dr. Johnson established his Veterinary practice, where he faithfully served all of McIntosh County and surrounding areas until his death. Dr. Johnson was a wonderful husband, exceptional father, always putting his family first, a great friend, and he never met a stranger. He enjoyed his cows, playing tennis, golf, hunting and boating. Dr. Johnson was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Lion's Club and the Checotah Chamber of Commerce, Masonic Lodge # 86 where he was a 32nd Degree Mason, Scottish Rite, Bedouin Shrine, OVMA-Oklahoma Veterinary Medical Association, AVMA-American Veterinary Medical Association and a member of the McIntosh County Cattleman’s Assoc. and was recently appointed by Governor Brad Henry to the State Board of Veterinary Examiners. Dr. Johnson was a man of great integrity, always willing to help and will be truly missed by all who knew him. He was preceded in death by his Father, Pete Johnson; Grandparents and his Mother-in-law, Lola Davis. Dr. Johnson is lovingly survived by his wife, Gayle of the home; their Children, Dr. Jeremy Johnson and his wife Crystal of Oklahoma City, OK, Justin Johnson and his Fiancée Ali Harter of Fayetteville, AR. Jace Johnson of Tahlequah, OK, and Jayme Johnson of Fayetteville, AR.; his Mother, Mildred Johnson, of Wheatland, WY; Sister, Linda Gilbertson and her husband Ed of Meriden, KS; Brother, Lee Johnson and his wife Evelyn of Wheatland, WY; Aunt, Maxine Suntych of Wheatland, WY; Father-In-Law, Jay Eldon Davis of Broken Arrow, OK; . Also surviving are several nieces, nephews, cousins, many, many clients and a host of friends. Memorials may be made in Dr. Johnson’s memory to the First United Methodist Church Building Fund , P.O. Box 36 Checotah, Ok. 74426. The family will greet friends from 2 pm to 4 pm, Sunday, September 14, 2008 at Garrett Family Funeral Home. A Service of Celebration for the life of Dr. Johnson will be held 11:00 A.M. Monday, September 14, 2008 at First United Methodist Church with Reverend Wayne Loftin, officiating. Committal prayers and Interment will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery with Dr. Steve Hodes, Dr. Steve Baar, Dr. Brad Reddick, Dr. Thomas McCoy, Dr. Mike Dew and Mike Stidham serving as Casket Bearers. Tony Weber, Dr. George Farris, Dr. Ken Moore, Jack Zimmerman, Dave Ambrose, Jerry Jeffries Larry Jennings, Terry Van Zandt, Mike Lee, Joe Tarman and Mark DeWeese will serve as Honorary Casket Bearers.
